The die is cast. Even if Sparta fails as a government run agency they're not going to tear it down or make something else out of it. The ATA would be in a position to lease the property and run it like it should be.
The facility will be difficult to duplicate but if a super duper benefactor with unlimited funds wants to - then so be it.
You Sparta basher should be glad there is a place to have the grand american trapshoot.Instead of running it down you should be promoting it. I know I would be there happy as a lark if my health would permit it. You don't know how much you miss going until you are not able to go. So quit complaining and be glad there is a Grand America no matter where it at.
If leasing is a possibility, I wonder if maybe this was the reason the Illinois State Government wanted a signed agreement so early. I would have thought it would have at least gone to the 8th year of the current agreement before asking for another contract agreement..
Just a thought...If there were people looking to lease the property, this agreement between the ATA and the State, would probably be a good sales pitch.
I'm glad that we now have a sense of permanence in Sparta.
I've gone the last three years, won't be able to go this year as I apparently have torn the rotator cuff on my righty shoulder.
There is nothing wrong with Sparta for shooting and the food at the restaurants I have been to in the neighboring towns is great.
Perhaps this news may cause some business owners to invest in another motel or a bunch of them. That's really all Sparta lacks.
Nothing wrong with the Cardinal either. I shot the Classic last year, and, for the same reason I can't attend the Grand this year, I will miss the Cardinal Classic, too.
It is what it is, that will make some people happy and some not so happy ... The attendance is what creates the bottom line, you can't have one without the other ... Good move or not only time will tell, up till now not a good move based on attendance ... Business 101, if the business won't come to you move your business to where the customers are ... Location, Location, Location ... WPT ... (YAC) ...
gee whiz WPT, thats the case with all of em i have went to. You have never been to the Grand in Sparta, My money says if it were still in Vandalia you wouldn't go there either, WHO cares if you go?? Opinions are like assholes and you are both....Would you go to the grand if it were in Phoenix, I doubt it too.
birdogs--With all due respect, people have been bad mouthing and slamming that facility and town before the Grand ever actually moved there. Like a kid bullied in school, you do it long enough he is likely gonna come up swinging sooner or later. Just review all the threads that have been started over the last few years with no other intention than to bad mouth Sparta/WSRC and stir the pot.
Wow…it’s nice to see those that don’t support the Sparta location and the decision making of the EC, band together and continue to fight the fight! Keep bashing and not attending the Grand because it’s at Sparta, and continue to throw the EC under the bus for ‘poor decision making’. These are exactly the type of attitudes and verbal garbage that will continue to grow/strengthen our sport and bring more new members aboard…….great job people….keep up the good work!
Actually, if the BOD got a better overall lease deal by extending the lease to 2026, they were smart. It depends if they saved money by doing it. In 3 years the lease could be substantially more depending what the political winds are.
The State of Illinois is the bad guy if they defund the facility.
Sledhead, a vast majority of ATA members voted to not move the Grand to Sparta when sent a survey letter. The EC and BoD did not adhere to the wishes of the membership. Many members to this day would prefer to see it moved to a more user friendly area. Extending a 10 year contract only 5 years in makes many wonder why when there is so much opposition to the location. All the complaining on TS.com has little if anything to do with the decline of the ATA and the Grand. JRM
3 years ago they didn't have the additional 6.8 billion in income taxes (3% raised up to 4.5%) coming in so they're like back to square "5". Also, the 5 Billion number was a Blagojevich watermark, after he couldn't really figure out if it was a 1 billion or 3 billion deficit. I've even heard "3-County Quinn" say the deficit is 15 billion, so who knows? At any rate, the 1 million Sparta loses each year is chickenfeed to Madigan and his bunch.
I wish ya'll would hush and let them bash Sparta.. I'm trying to lease the dog-gone place... the more people who hate it, the cheaper I can get the rent!
I've almost got them sold on the fact that only 150 shooters will show up and so I can't afford much in rent. Give me a bit of help here guys..
perga1. So what would you have done, considering the same circumstances that the EC faced, if you were the king of the ATA back then? Be honest.
