Trap gun buying advise

I enjoy trap more than skeet although my club has booth. We also have doubles. I have over an hour to drive to shoot SC and it's more expensive. I want to buy a dedicated trap gun, but don't want a full race trap gun. I would like to be able to shoot SC and even skeet occasionally so I don't want a gun that's 100 competition level. I have been thinking about a 32 or 30 inch Browning over under. What I don't have a handle on is why do people use top single and under single barrels for singles trap and not just shoot an over under, especially if doubles is an option and you don't shoot enough ( or rich enough ) to have dedicated guns. Would I likely shoot better with a BT-99 than an over under for singles? About the only over single and two barrel set I could afford would be a used CG entry level or maybe a new Fabarms combo, but that's too much money to me for a sport specific gun. Are there world class singles shooters that just use an over under or is that some kind of handicap and why? I could see picking up a BT-99 and B gun over under and being pretty much covering all my bases if that's likely to be a big improvement

It sounds like affordability could be a major part of You’re decision, and why wouldn’t it be…..there’s a lot of conversation about the costs of participating in the shooting sports, let alone the cost of a shotgun to do so. Don’t be afraid to look into a good used gun from a reputable dealer, especially a higher end shop. But if your intension is to potentially do it all, a decent O/U is the way to go. My primary gun is a Beretta 682, 32” bbl trap model, I shoot all the games with it and it works just fine. Would I shoot better with a dedicated gun for each individual purpose?? Perhaps, but it gets Me in the door and I enjoy it all.
Good luck with You’re pursuit.
Shoot well

I have on occasion used my O/U for trap. It will swing slower than a single barrel. Slowing down can be good for me as I tend to jump on the target and pull the trigger before I get to the target. I have a BT99 and a 625 Sporting that I have shot with no difference in scores at the trap range. If you are willing to consider used/preowned shotguns like I have done, you can have a game specific shotgun for small money, comparatively. The BT99 gets most of the trap rounds and the 625 all of the Sporting rounds. I have about $3000 invested in the pair. I am the second owner of both guns and the 625 is a low round count find that remains factory stiff compared to the BT. When asked to shot the occasional round or 2 of skeet I pull out the wife's Browning Gold with 28 inch barrel (preferred) or take the 625.

The swing of a single barrel is faster for sure.

Alot of the ppl I know with 2 barrel combo sets never shoot trap doubles. The o/u barrel is used for sporting or skeet.

If you can afford a browning combo. Get one. If not get a high post, trap, cxt o/u. And get comfortable with it.

I have an adjustable rib gun. To move the poi. But I will shoot trap, skeet, doubles trap and sporting in the same day
Or somtimes a different one each day. I switch back and forth alot.

Buy the O/U of your choice. I was naive enough to think that if I closed my eyes and swung my combo barrels separately that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Not true. They don't feel the same and it bothered me. Note that I did shoot it successfully for 10 years. I finally put my combo in the safe and I have been shooting a custom fitted 32 inch O/U since 2016. I have no plans to go back to my combo.

I might add that a single barrel as in a unisingle or BT 99 is matter of choice. One is not better than the other. I have a BT and an O/U. I do quite well with either. They definitely feel different, but both will get you in the winners circle. I currently shoot with former and current state champions In trap. They all shoot different configurations depending on whether or not they shoot doubles. As I stated earlier, you would be better off shooting an O/U of your choice for everything. Watch out for the old timer with one gun.

I shoot handicap better with my single. I also shoot singles better at the 16 yard line with my single. Of course, I use my O/U for doubles but the single for everything else. I got a good deal on a Zoli Z-Trap combo and I am very pleased with it.

You might look at Guns Unlimited for a nice Browning Citori 725 Combo. Great trap guns from what I hear and I don't think you can beat the price anywhere.

Best of luck!

You might want to look at a Fabarm AllSport O/U. I think it would work well for what you want adjustable comb monte-carlo stock and 2 quick change ribs. One rib is 60/40 POI for trap and the other is 50/50 POI for skeet and sporting clays. I got a young man who is starting out set up with one and it is working out very well.

A browning cx 12ga with an adjustable comb and adjustable length of pull ar a adjustable recoil system barrel length is up to you. You can shoot any clay game you want! Just don't get the factory adjustable comb. I am now using a o/u for trap and shooting just as good as my single barrel gun. Another gun to look at if you like flat ribs is the joel etchen 687 all around gun it is a flat rib sporting clays gun with a monte carlo stock.

I'm a simple-minded, new(ish) shooter. I own a Browning CX -60/40- for "all-around" shooting. In a given week, I might shoot Wobble Trap, Skeet and some Sporting Clays.

THEN, I bought a Browning CXS 50/50 with the idea that it would help with my Skeet outings.

Nope...With the CXS ..... 50/50....My old brain just wouldn't quickly adapt to staying on the bird. It wanted to stay just below the bird, as I did with my 60/40 CX. After a half-dozen tries, I went back to my CX 60/40 for everything.

My scores are better in all disciplines when i keep it simple and consistent at 60/40.
Might just be an.... Old Dog & New Tricks.....phenomenon.

If I was able to “restart” lol I’d choose a good o/u that fit me. But I went down the combo path ages ago with high shooting single barrels but a much flatter poi on the o/u component. If chose the simpler path now I might not live long enough to re-learn! While I’ve been known to shoot occasional round of skeet , 5stand and sporting with the o/u ocassional round of trap singles will quickly remind that my mind/eye system wants a full pattern high
