I was kinda of leery clicking on the thread because I did not see the word “cartridge“ the first time I read it. Only after I read the headline again was I brave enough to open it, but no use.

 

I have photographed the old Peters CARTRIDGE company site many times. When the Grand was in Vandalia and I was the sales rep in Ohio (1985-88) whenever I was in the area I would cruise by. Still in awe of all that went on on that site...

Here are two photos I have digitized. If I find the numerous others, will post them sometime.

Do I assume correctly that the tall, square structure was a shot tower?

 

Nice that it is not being torn down like the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia.

 

We had Peters cartridges sold in the Philippines, circa late '50s, early '60s. I remember using their .22LR while hunting wild pigeons with my maternal grandfather.

Cartridge production ceased in July 1944. In August 1944 an explosion of propellant killed 1 person and wrecked 4 buildings.

Delco Remy took the plant over that year and made parts for Higgins boats.

Near the end of 1944, Columbia Records purchased the facility. They used the facility to press vinyl records. In 1946 Columbia shut down the engine room (smokestack needed for). Columbia ceased production in 1948; sold the complex to the Seagram Distillery company in 1950.

Scott, was there an earlier explosion or two prior to the 1944 explosion? I would have sworn the Peters & King book discuss one, maybe two earlier explosions prior to the buildings in the pictures being built, back in the days of black powder production? That may have been another location, but I thought King, Peters, DuPont (depending the ownership/label name) were always in the Kings Mill area, even when they pulled powder wagons/rail cars by horse or mule.

Yes, I have one from 53 years ago when my cousin stabbed me in the leg with a pencil in 8th grade. It hasn't changed one bit in all those years.

 

I have one from 8th grade, too. Never found out who did it, I was running down the hall trying to make it to class on time.

 

So they have produced ammunition, boats, rock and roll records, and booze there.
And now it's going to be apartments for hipsters and yuppies.

 

Sad times indeed. Is this the new future of America?

I do, from pushing my brother in a homemade go cart. My hand slipped off his shoulder and onto the pencil he had upside down in his shirt pocket and became imbedded in my palm.

 

I also have a pencil lead tattoo from 43 years ago

Actually happy that it is going to be used for something rather than torn down.
A whole lot of history in those buildings.

 

FINALLY going to be used for something. Over the years it seems like it was going to be a million and one things. Every time, the plans fell through. When the luxury apartment thing came up, I thought “yeah, right.” I’m glad to see it happening.

 

What frosts me is that the environmental impacts from volcanoes, earthquakes and resulting tsunamis, sun spots and solar winds, tornadoes and hurricanes, apparently will NOT BE REDUCED no matter how much fossil fuels are eliminated by Biden and the dumocrats.

 

Only thing Democrats are intent on eliminating is the money in your wallet and bank account.
