I believe the high auction prices are partially due to the ammo no longer being made.

Many people report the rounds to not be particularly accurate.

 

I have heard they tumble before 100 yards. Also there when fired, no rifling marks on bullet.

 

Given that the bullet is encased in a sabot, there SHOULD be no rifling marks on the bullet.

 

They were a gimmick. Not as accurate as 150 gr. .30-06, I shot a box up after being disgusted by a buckshot-like group at 50 yards. (Definitely was not me. I had it bagged up solid.)

They would be good for allowing a recoil-shy person to shoot a .30-06, but they'd better not be shy of the added noise! Loud! When I got some Czech 46 gr. training rounds in 7.62x54R, they reminded me of the Accelerators, except they were actually accurate to 100 yards.

 

I got 20 boxes (a case) of 30-06 Accelerators yeas ago at a tax auction. There was a few boxes of the 30-30 Accelerators too. I could never get anything good out of the 30-30 Accelerators and I think that was because of the short barrel but 30-06 work very well out of my with a 24 inch barrel. I tried them in a Remington pump 06 with an 18" barrel and that was poor also.
So I ended up with about 8 boxes of them that work well and a buddy of mine had to have the shells and the rifle. I didn't miss the ammo but I did miss the rifle and it took me 15 or 20 years before I found another 06 that I liked.

The shells were a lot of Remington promotion and no advantage over the standard loadings. At the same auction I got 3 cases of Remington 125 grain 06 ammo and I really like that stuff. Turned out to be a great deer and coyote cartridge.

 

Quirky ammo. Short run. Increases Collector demand. High prices.

 

If I recall correctly, they were marketed as a way to use the 30-06 for coyotes and varmints where a person could get double duty from their 30-06.

they did not seem to be made for very long.

 

I bought the sabot casings and load my own (you can still get them). Yes, they allow a 22 caliber bullet to be shot through a 30 caliber barrel.

Correct, there will be no rifling on the bullet.

And they exit the barrel at stupid velocities (5,000 fps + in a 300 Weatherby) - I think the issue with 'tumbling' was more that the bullets tore themselves apart from the speed. Find the right bullet and they were stunning. When I first loaded with these I tried some hollow point bullets - at 100 yards I never hit the target, but there was no impact in the backstop area either. Took a while to realize the bullets were exploding.

Oh, and do NOT shoot these in barrels with any kind of muzzle brake device.

Got a box of these back when they came out and was extremely disappointed with them. I shot at a beautiful 10pt whitetail at around 200 yards 4 times only to have him laugh and trot off. He knew there was no need to run. The brick that broke the donkeys back was when I came upon Sasquatch resting by a creek and I sent 3 rounds at him. Thought maybe the bullet was traveling so fast that it’s impact wasn’t visible but after looking for over a hour I found no blood trail.

Had some in.308….fast as hell but not accurate.

 

It's best to ask those who been using them for years on coyote and other predators. All this hear say from those who do not have a clue. I will buy every box I can find at a reasonable price especially the 30-30 rounds, for use in my 788 Remington.

 

I bought a few boxes in the 80s for fox hunting (30-30), worst accuracy I've ever seen out of a rifle, I'm sure I still have some.

 

Funny. Here in North Dakota we have been shooting the 30-30 Accelerator's for years. We buy them wherever we can. Good coyote round to about 250 Yds. with my 788 Rem. Didn't care for the 30-06 rd. They were inaccurate with just about every rifle except with an old Winchester 70 feather weight, not too bad with that rifle.

 

I have one box. Waiting for legislation making them illegal so I can double my money and get $20 before law kicks in. LOL
Dad and I bought some when they came out. Crap stuff. We also bought a Gyrojet and a Dardick. Wish I had those two loser guns. Worth a bundle now.

 

Tried loading some for woodchucks. Had load date, started low and worked up and none were accurate past 75 yds. Did get a few chucks at that didtance and missed a lot at 100 yds and farther. Bought 500 sabots and after testing and loading almost 100 I gave up on them and sold them on ebay several years ago in lots of 100 wit ha printed reload data sheet and got more per 100 than I paid for 500. I thonk everyone bought them because you could load any 30 cal. rifle to shoot over the "magic" 4000 FPS speed

 

Never tried reloading them because of the intricate design. I and many others up North been using them for years on Coyotes. No problem with 30-30 accel accuracy up to 225-250 yds with A Remington 788, or Savage 340. Nice thing about them is one doesn't have to be MOA accurate when they hit. There's not too much left. My friends and l laugh hearing those who claim
how inaccurate they are. It keeps the priced down at gun shows. Have some factory loads for $20+ put them where your mouth is and list them for sale.

 

I picked up a bunch of the sabots at the last gun show for cheap. Going to try loading some up for the .308 and 30-06 and see how they do.

 

I used these exclusively in the 70's and 80's for groundhogs. Performed flawlessly in my old Rem 700 ADL, 30.06. Probably shot >100 groundhogs; furthest being right at 280yd measured with a laser. Have about a box and a half left and I save them for coyotes. No complaints here; wish they were still made.

I reloaded some for my father in law in 30-06 put 3 shots in about a 12 inch circle!! Fast but not accurate.

 

A much better round if one wants to shoot a sabot round at higher velocities is to use a sabot using cast acrylic. A 223 could be shot out of any larger caliber like a .300 win mag or any projectile caliber combination. The cast acrylic disintegrates upon exiting the barrel sending a pristine round down range with complete ballistic stability and seriously increased terminal velocity and no internal ballistic data. One could also send any other caliber previously fired with complete accuracy. Using cast acrylic eliminates the problems with the old accelerator round technology. Developed in the Lab and tested in the field the round has none of the drawbacks of the previous round.

 

I would sell them on Gun Broker for nuts prices. Maybe they have value as a collector ammo since they only made them for what, 3 or 4 years? I remember seeing those at SHOT show in the early 1990s, and like everyone has already said, they were garbage accuracy and just a novelty.

 

I have a box of them in 3006 and 308...found them at a flea market and thought they were cool...ill never use them lol

 

Tried them once in a 30-30. Never bought a second box. Cool idea.

 

Sabots are still available, probably better than what Remington offered decades ago: Accelerator Type Sabots for .30 Caliber Cartridges (100)

They could also be made on a resin 3d printer which would allow you to tweak design and tolerance, dunno if the resin could withstand the pressure though.
