Powder to Replace Hodgdon Clays?

I've reloaded AA hulls with Winchester primers and wads, and Hodgdon Clays powder for a long time. I knew Winchester 209 primers were currently unavailable, but Remington 209's will substitute in my loads according to the Hodgdon web site. I've now been told that Clays, and any other powder that can be used in handgun loads, is also unavailable.

What clean burning powder would you recommend? Any thought on primers?

I've been very happy with E3 for 7/8oz. and 1oz. loads, both around 1195fps. The recoil will be pretty sharp with 11/8oz., especially HDCP loads. Very clean, very consistent. Slightly cheaper. ($2-3 less/8lbs. vs. Clays)

Go down one bushing from what you use in Clays and you'll get a load that uses 0.5-1.0 grains less than Clays with roughly 10-15fps more velocity; more loads per bottle. MADE IN THE USA!

As Always, verify your powder drops with a scale.

I'm somewhat in the same situation as you and many others. I'm looking forward to switching over to Clay Dot. Heck, I'm a die hard Clays user but, if it ain't there and I switch I ain't going back. I think I'm gonna find that it has been over rated and over priced.

If you like Hodgdon products, as I do, try Titewad or Titegroup.

They are denser powders, so they will not take up as much space in the hull as Clays does.

Both very clean.

Tom,
I called Alliant and they told me the recipes were interchangeable when I first bought the powder. Frankly, I have not used it yet as I find Promo does everything I need for Trap (only at the 23 yard line) at a lower cost. I bought it for pistol loads.

You are smart to question. There are plenty of "experts" on the web who haven't a clue.

Clays is really not a great choice for a powder for 1 1/8 oz loads in STS or Win AA hulls. The tendency for the pressures to be fairly high is there. Clay Dot is "similar" to Clays and I would not recommend using the data interchangeably. A lot of the data that Hodgdon's has published is old. Notice a lot of "LUPs" rather than PSI. It's a great powder for 7/8, 1oz, and "SOME" 1 1/8 up to 1150 fps in the tapered hulls. I would opt for a different powder for the 1200 fps 1 1/8 oz in order to keep the pressures reasonable. In the 2009 Alliant Guide, they do list ONE load for a 1 1/8 oz load. It's well over 10,000 PSI, so I would not consider using it to any great extent. In the Federal Gold Medal Hulls, it's an entirely differnt story. Clays/Clay Dot is a great powder for 1200 fps 1 1/8 oz loads.
