Great post. I started reloading in ‘76-‘77 not for target shooting but for dove loads. I never got into reloading papers but wish I did. I use to help a buddy’s gramp reload his paper hulls, he got me started into reloading. My first machine (still have it) was a MEC PlasticMaster or something on that line. These were prior to the 600 Jr. Presses. First couple of years all I loaded were Remington plastics. Wish I held onto my first empty can of powder. But I still have a few things from back then.
The J.C.Penny's store in town was the area's biggest reloading components store! The largest firearm store was a furniture store!
My first rifle scope was purchased at a local hardware store. A Weaver 4-12 with paralex adjustment, 1971 still in use today, never failed and put on numerous guns. $75!! But then, minimum wage was under $2 per hour! Worked a lot of hours after school to get it!
Sears was the easiest place to get shotshells. But even back in those days I had no idea who was making them or what exact components where in them. I believe Federal.
In my travels to dove hunt I found a landowner who let me hunt on his place but was not keen on me bringing anyone else. Ok no problem. He was a target shooter and had no desire to hunt me gave me my first few batches of Remington hull.
I love it when you guys bring up some of these memory lane moments. I wasn’t a country boy but no city punk. I didn’t come from money. But I enjoyed growing up the way I did with no regrets. Had a grandfather with brothers who were hunters, shooter and fisherman. Picked up things from them.
Fondly recall the old Lage wads and others! Now I don’t exactly recall where my last 2 ancient powder cans are stored, will have to run down that IMR-4227 & 3f GOEX black
I can remember walking into Ace Hardware. Hanging on the wall for years was a 28 gauge model 12, no rib. Dad said nobody will ever buy that gun. Just what the heck do you hunt with a 28gauge.
We had an old Firestone that quit selling guns in the 70's but he still had several that had never had the straps cut on the box up until he sold the business several years ago I remember looking at a Remington 1100 20 ga that still had the price of 179.95 on the box , needless to say that wasn't the new selling price
I remember going into my sporting goods store and gazing at the rack of guns when I was 10 or so. End up buying my first gun through my brother when he was old enough to do it. To bad those little mom and pop places are gone.
