A friend and I were talking about having trouble with stray dogs messing with our farm animals and about him having issues with a Billy goat that tries to take him out every time in gets in the field with him. That got me to thinking about using the less lethal buckshot rounds for situations like that.

Has anyone tried loading some non lethal 12 or 20ga. loads. A quick google search didnt turn up much for finding the rubber shot or load data. Just curious if anyone has tried it?

A co-worker was having problems with vandals and asked me where to get shotgun shells with rock salt. I had him bring me some rock salt and loaded them into some Federal papers. It was several years before I saw him again and I aske if he ever got a chance to try them on the vandals, he said no. I told him I was curious about them and he said they worked great.

Apparently he got home from work around 4AM and set out his trash, at some point he got up to get a drink and saw his Irish Setter shoulder deep into a trash bag, it pissed him off and he got one of the salt shells and let the dog have one in the ass, he said the dog went about 1/4 mile down the road and to that day when he got out a trash bag the dog found somewhere else to be.

Unpopped popcorn kernels work well....they even pattern pretty decent....tried some pinto beans once too...couldnt fit enough in the hull..

Fed Gold Medal hull
18 gr Green Dot
AA12R wad
Any 209 primer
Fill up with popcorn kernels to bottom of crimp
Overshot card wad

The neighbors feral cats hated them ..

Have fun...

Many years ago my Mom was teaching a Sunday school class to young children. The church was a rural one and there was a pack of wild dogs that actually lived in large holes in a wooded hillside behind the church. These curs kept growling at the kids when they had recess etc. My Dad ran the churches hall and noticed that the dogs would always be sniffing around a dumpster out back. One day my Dad put some meat etc on top of the dumpster and I got on the roof with a 12 gauge loaded with 00 buck. Killed all of them (7) in two days! Eh, somebody had to do it.

I'm guessing rock salt would have a negative effect on the bore of a 12ga. I know I wouldn't be shooting it through any of mine.

Years ago, there was a guy that had some shells that launched some kind of firecracker 50 or so yards it would explode. Was quite loud. Said they used them at the dump to run off the seagulls.
Don't have any idea where he got them.

Try freezing paintballs and use them.

OUCH!!!! I'd say your going to get penetration. People would think the neighborhood kids did it with a paintball gun, if the stray actually turn out to be someone's dog, and managed to limp home, with some paint on it or melting out of it.

P3AT, you are an evil genius, and I like the way you think!!

Always heard rock salt worked, but never knew anyone who actually used it.
Rock salt DOES work, according to one of my uncles.

As kids, Dad and my uncles were raiding the orchard of an old boy on the island. The old boy heard them and came out of the house raging, with a SxS shotgun in hand. All the older boys saw this and ran like h3ll, hurdling the fence and disappearing in the dark. My youngest uncle was a little slow, as he climbed down out of the tree he was in, rather than jump out, so he just dove through the fence, as he was too small to hurdle it, and climbing would have taken too long.

As he went through the fence, the old guy let fly with one barrel, peppering my uncle's upper thighs and backside, but missing all the important bits. For 3 or 4 days, my uncle was extremely sore, with large welts, and found it hard to sit down. He also had to steer clear of the old fellow, who was travelling the island looking for a kid having trouble walking and sitting. No salt penetrated, luckily, but it stung enough that he never went on another raid of that orchard.

On a side note, I was told by a guy years ago, that if rock salt does break the skin and penetrate, it stings like h3ll for a long time, until it dissolves and is absorbed by the body. What he used was black peppercorns. They are small enough that you can get a pretty good payload in a shell, and are round enough that you get a reasonable pattern. BUT, if they penetrate the skin, they just sit in there and burn like fury until they are removed.

What difference does it make whether the load is more or less lethal, it's still lethal in the long run. I guess if the load is "less lethal," it will only "lightly kill" what it's aimed at? What you mean is non-lethal, something that will get the message across but no more than that. I have my doubts about the effectiveness of rock salt at anything other than close range, I can't see there being enough weight to allow the load to build enough pressure to give it any meaningful velocity. Popcorn sounds better, but not much. Maybe some #12 shot?

Nebs:

"Less lethal" is a term commonly used now (particularly in law enforcement) for things like chemical agents, impact weapons, bean bags, rubber shotgun slugs, 40mm rubber projectile, and other similar things. The term "Less lethal" is used due to fact that in certain instances all of the above "could be" lethal even when not intended to be. Hence the newer terminology of "less lethal". The OP was not incorrect in considering current terminology.

That said, I get you meaning too!!!

When we were kids 60 years ago we were playing on some construction equipment that we had been told not to the week before. Well, this fellow came out with a SxS and a couple of us got shot in the backside with rock salt. Good thing it was summer. I told my mom I got hurt jumping out of a tree. We all healed up just fine. And no, I'd have trouble believing rock salt could hurt a gun barrel. It's steel - has to be harder than the salt. Load it down to 1000fps or less.

We use and carry with our agency "Less Lethal" rounds made by a company called ALS. We have 2-3/4" 12ga rounds in 24cal, 68cal and rubber fin stabilized rounds. We as well utilize the bean bag rounds with a tail for stability also. The 24 cal, 68 cal and bean bag rounds are for 7-15yds and the fin rounds are for over 25yds.
Yes, they are "Less Lethal" in 99% of the instances, BUT!!!!!!!! They can and have been found to have been lethal in the rare occurence as with any thing of this nature. They are just another tool in our arsenal to use in place of using lethal force when all circumstances dictate otherwise. Just as are our tasers, OC pepper spray and batons. We constantly train to keep our expertise and proficiency up with these tools.
