I've got a GSP. He's pretty awesome... but it really depends on the type of hunting that you want to do. He'll run all day and happily hold a point for an age. Tends to look at you like you're an idiot if you miss though...

 

I’m “assuming “ you mean GSP not gap . If so I would think that would be a great dog, although I don’t know of any myself. The Labradors and German Shorthair Pointers I have had were outstanding dogs, Both as hunters and companions.

If you wil check Lab is part of the GSP bloodline. Some GSP's make great water retreivers.

Five years ago when I was looking to replace my old lab I found a guy in South Dakota who bread lab/gsp's. I talked with him and actually was considering buying one but ended up going with a British lab instead. I do hunt with a guy who has a gsp and she is a fine retriever in the blind when hunting ducks and geese.

 

I have hunted, trained and raised pointing labs for about 20 years. I think they are the perfect versatile dog.

I think the 'lab' I just adopted is actually a lab/gsp - he has a long tail for a lab and a head shaped more like GSP but solid black color and is 55 lb at 6 months. It will be interesting to work with him although his energy level is off the charts right now and he is easily distracted during training efforts.

 

Go with the Deutsch Drahathar,- Drath for short. Does everything- land-water, points. Something like a GWP, but breeding is very strict. It is to keep the breed as pure as possible. Garth, my current dog, was diving for crippled ducks at 10 months old. That is desire and natural!!! Ed.

When I was heavily involved in NAVHDA a guy showed up at a training day with one.

 

a guy I know has a lab/gwp cross, good dog he uses him all the time to hunt quail, pheasant, for clients on his game preserve

 

No complaints but he is not a mix. Will go all day , water , land . 2 ND picture 4 months old
