Pheasant hunting season is coming and will be taking United out for the event. Wondering if anyone has flown United, and is encountered oversized bag fees when carrying their rifle and baggage. I currently have a Franchi Affinity Compact, roughly 48” stock to barrel. Looking to get a case for transport but one that won’t incur United’s excessive oversized charge of $200 per bag.
Anyone fly with them? What was your experience with the gate agent at check- in? Not worried about TSA, air tagging the case too.
Thanks in advance!

Yup flown with my guns with United all over the US and overseas.

I use the Pelican 1700 since it was under the oversized bag metric (length + height + width).
Use non tsa locks in all 4 holes and you're good to go.

I also have my name and phone number on the outside of the case as well as an airtag in the case to help it find me.

I usually do not fly United. I did book them one of the ways due to price and schedule for a deer hunt this fall. This post just encouraged me to measure my aluminum airline case. It measures about 70". DANG! I'm not paying an oversize fee. Live and learn. What to do now? Hate to buy another case as this one works really well.
