What is a good substitute wad for the DRV12 (Downrange Versalite)? Are they comparable to WAA12? We are trying to search for loads with American Select since they have a deep cup and end up with dished in crimps with WSH, HG. Thank you.

This is a very confusing post and suggests there are dished crimps with dense powders. The mentions of Am. Select and DRV12 wads ere unexplained. No mentilon of the hul type. Could the OP maybe explain better what his problem is and what the plan is for solving it?

Tried loading sts and AA with wsh and hg and those versalites but they need a low density fluffy powder to support them since they are a short wad. A test with 20grains of AS seems to resolve the dished crimp issue but maybe too much pressure. So we are needing guidance regarding a load in the 1200fps range that is tested and safe. Very little available data for this combo cheddite primers and 1 1/8 oz.

To resolve the dished crimp issue, you will need a 1 oz. wad instead of a 1 1/8 oz wad when using the STS. The crimp dishing should be less of an issue if you are using the newer AAHS hull. But if you are using an old style AACF, they wlll behave like an STS on this stack height issue. I'm assuming you have all 3 powders.

Also, when asking a question regarding your load, it would help us all of you could provide all the components you are using or have on hand. When asking a question about pressure, a key component is the primer.

Thank you, Sounds good, will try a 1 oz wad. The Versalite Wads ( we have 3K) in AAHS are tedious since they seem to not seat all the way due to air?or other reasons 3 out of 5 times, you have to push them down with your finger along with the shot( no issue with STS hulls, they seats too deep). Problem goes away in the STS hulls using a low density powder, therefore the questions.

The Downrange wads are so slick, trapped air will push them back up. Try backing off the wad pressure.

and if you choose to keep using the 1 1/8oz wad, then it may be time to break out some Cheerios to mitigate the crimp dishing.

Are you catching the edge of the 3 piece Reifenhauser base? I doubt it's trapped air.
Are you seating the wad deeper than 0.040" from the hull mouth?
There is no need for wad pressure. Just seat it and go.
STS hulls don't need the lead-in taper and will easily let the wad be set too deeply.
Problem goes away with what powder(s)?

Something is not adding up...your describing symptoms without data.

"Are you catching the edge of the 3 piece Reifenhauser base? I doubt it's trapped air."
Probably, so we no longer attempt the use of AA hulls, the STS hulls do not have that issue.

"Are you seating the wad deeper than 0.040" from the hull mouth?"
I have them set shallow to where I have to activate the shot bar by hand on our Dillon loader.

Any Bulky powder seems to remedy the issue, American Select is what we have, red dot, green dot, would probably work as well.

STS, Gun Club, and AA CF work better with the bulky powders you mentioned. More room for the sauce. Dense powders like Perfect Pattern and High Gun charge weights below 16 grains start having stack height issues that some like me have worked around by downsizing the wad.

AA HS is better at handling the denser powders even though it may still involve wad downsizing.

Your first clue to switch to AA HS is when the powder VMD < 0.1000.

Looks like you figured out it's going to be American Select, 1 oz wads, and STS hulls. (y)
