Citori 525 vs. Citori CX

I have narrowed my gun choice down to two options.

Option 1 - New Browning Citori CX, with 30" Barrels. This gun would be purchases stock with no upgrades at the moment.

Option 2 - Used Browning Citori 525 grade 3, ported 30" barrels.

How do these two guns stack up against one another? The price is going to be about the same for either option. What is the best purchase, the new CX or uses 525 in excellent condition?

Thanks guys!

First off I see the CX has a higher rib (some shooters really like this), but still shoots the same 60/40 as the 525. That and the CX has a high gloss finish. This gun also has the lighting type forend. Not a real winner, but OK. drop at comb is 1 1/2 inches and drop at heel is 2 inches for the stock size

The 525 has a oil finish. A lower rib height. But, it has a the more sought after silver nitrate finish. Its really durable, were the blue finish will wear off over time at a much faster rate. I kind of like the oil finish myself as it keeps my head put better on hot sweaty days. My head tends to slide just enough on a gloss stock to effect my scores on hot days. The engraving is much nicer on the 525 as well. drop at comb is 1 9/16 and drop at heel is 2 3/8 for the stock size.

Its pretty much a toss up. Both guns will shoot the same. Its just what you like better on a personnal note. let us know what you decide!!!

On a side note: You can't buy a PFS Stock for the 525. I'm not sure, but I believe the CX has the standard receiver on it, so that Vern's PFS Stock will bolt up to it. The PFS Stock is a great stock for those who need one. Other than that, I would lean toward the 525 as well. Its will hold up better over time with Silver Nitrate receiver. The triggers are the same, the barrels are the same. Only difference would be if the CX has the high rib. Not all shooters can shoot them. I see many high rib barrels being sold right now from shooters who just had to buy one and could not end up using them. So my advice is be sure you want a high rib shotgun, before you buy one. The only way to do this is to shoot a high rib shotgun at least 3 times on different days. Then you'll be able to make a better decision. break em all Jeff

The CX and the CXS are the same "tried and true" Citori actions they have been making for about 40 years or so. Nearly all parts in the action (hammers, springs, locking bolt, inertia block, etc) will interchange on all these guns. Parts are available and likely will continue to be available for these guns for long after we're all dead.

The 725 is a completely redesigned gun that Citori brought out to more closely resemble and compete against the lighter weight competition guns... particularly the Berettas. Some shooters like the 725's better, but many shooters who have shot the Citoris for years don't like them as well. It appears that the 725's will be around for a good while longer, but it's doubtful, IMO, that they will ever replace the Citori because there are just too many people who like the rugged simplicity and easy to maintain Citori.

You can count me among those who prefer the older but still going strong Citori action. Add in the fact that when buying the CX or CXS you save several hundred dollars over a comparable 725 and it's an easy decision to make. Besides, I don't want a LIGHTER O/U for target shooting. To the contrary, I want an O/U that weighs around 8 3/4 pounds or a little more, and it's easier to get the older Citori guns up to that weight than it is the lighter 725's.

No, you wouldn't be crazy to buy the CX or CXS in 30" barrels. In fact, that would be my choice.

That may be more information and opinion than you were looking for, but there it is.

I just bought a cx a short time ago. Good gun and it shoots well. I do shoot singles trap better with my Browning bps trap edition. However, I just got back into shooting after a 20 some year vacation this April so not really in with the times anymore. I think the bps just fits better. Last week a guy said my misses were low with the cx. The bps does have a higher comb maybe it is that? The difference between the two guns isn't huge. I have had several 24's with the bps and top is 22 with the cx. Just stinks shooting the 400 dollar pump better...lol.
