No, not even close.

 

I picked up two off of the ground yesterday at a sporting Clay shoot and could not tell the difference between the feel of the plastic, the length of the brass, or the innards of the hull. The new ones look the same to me. But I am totally open to others' knowledge.

 

I think Win made some ammunition for Herters. I don't know if they made it in 28 ga, but they might have. Regardless, the 28 ga. AAHS is a simple straight-walled Riefenhauser-type hull, unlike its 12 and 20 ga, cousins. It's likely just about any Herter's hull is the same. Cut one of each open and compare the innards. It's likely they are the same or similar from a reloading data standpoint but no where near similar in terms of quality.

 

I saw Herters 28ga at Cabela’s that looked like a black Win AAHS. was about 2 years ago.

I was in a Cabelas last week and looked at their 28 Ga Herters ammo. I do believe the new Herter's is a Winchester AA hull only black in color. I am speaking of the 28 Ga only as I did not look at the other gauges.

 

Nobody here seems to have any 1st hand knowledge; this is the 1st time this has come up. Cut some open. Let's see what they look like on the inside. Pix?

Herter's current shotgun ammo is being made by Winchester.

 

That is my understanding. I just didn't know if the hulls were of the same quality.

 

Browning ammo is made by Winchester also.

 

All I heard was that Winchester starting making the Herter's shells for Cabela's a few years back. I assumed they were talking about the 20 and 12 ammo. I was unaware that Herter's made the 28 shells as well. Now I wonder if they make a 410 bore as well? Mmm break em all jeff

 

Sorry if I spoke too soon! The last Herters 28 and 410 shells I have seen resembled the Maroon Federal Gold Medals.

 

FWIW, I obtained some 20ga hulls with "Browning's" Logo, and they had the feel of Winchester making. They could have been brass washed steel, and they were 6pt crimp. Im shooting them now, have gotten several reloads and a few have split down the side.
If they were 8pt crimp they would be "highly desired" in my shop.. ha
Yea, Winchester seems to be making shells for several companies.

 

For the past several years, the Herters 28 gauge shells have been made by Winchester. The hull is identical to the AA, except the tube is black. Even the basewads are red and stamped “WW”. Punch out the primer, and you’ll see that the head is brass, not brass plated steel, as it will not stick to a magnet once the primer is gone.

Current Herters .410s are also made by Winchester, and the hulls are identical to the AAHS, except for the black tube. Current 12s and 20s are basically a Winchester Super Target or Universal hull.

The previous Herters 28s from 5-10 years ago used a Cheddite hull with a high, brass plated steel cap. It’s really easy to tell the difference.

 

Just ordered some of the 28 gauge . Will let everyone know . If they are in fact HSAA hulls that are black or not.
The old ones (Maroon) were a Cheddite product. They were very reloadable.

 

Did anyone put a magnet to the “brass” on the Herters shells? I would imagine that they are steel, and probably more in line with the Browning shells than a AA.

Well, you have put paid to the argument. The ones I saw were not marked as WIN HS, but as Herter's. One lot must have gone through.

The next time I have a chance to grab some I shall. It was 2 weeks ago, while walking a local SC course, that I noticed them. Barring any club rules to the contrary, I usually pick up 28 gauge AA hulls and save them for friends of mine that reload. They looked and felt identical, except the color.

 

My uncle was shooting some last week and I was impressed by the plastic compared to the 20ga Heaters. Then he told me they were the same as the AA's and I didn't argue with him. They looked awfully close.
