I watched some videos on this biting-castration method after Murph mentioned it. I'm trying to figure out why they don't just grab em with their hands. The videos I saw had em popped right out there to get a hold of. There's gotta be a reason they use their teeth. Murph?
These castration stories bring back a good old memory. Back when my grandparents had cattle, the neighbor would come down and help castrate. Afterwards they'd fry up some rock mountain oysters. Well one day Ben and grandpa were at a rodeo steer wrestling, when one of the younger guys, Glenn, offered to help out with an old nasty steer. Grandpa said come on over, so Glenn comes on over the next day. Long story short, they got the steer on its side, and grandpa goes in with the sheers and right after he cuts them off, gets kicked in the leg. Bens on the other side holding the sucker down, and just as the oysters hit the ground, he swoops down, picks them up, and grabs them with his teeth. Well that was a little much for old Glenn McCulum, he just got right up and headed around the edge of the barn. Some just aren't cut out for farm work. LOL

Nope! I use forceps and surgical scissors. If you clamp the tail for a 30 sec or so before and after the cut, there is very little bleeding. if there is bleeding you can add a simple powder to stop it. the important thing is to know the length of tail you want and to dock the tail before the puppy is 3 days old. I like a 50% tail on german short hair pointers so I've measured and/or used a 2 finger approach.

i breed German Short Hair pointers and it's very easy to doc the tail and remove the due claws. I prefer forceps and surgical curved scissors. clamp it before you cut and there is very little bleeding... make sure you doc within 2 to 4 days or it will be harder to do and more painful to the pup. If you have a good relationship with your vet, they will show you how to do it. You don't need to add a stitch. There are videos on youtube also. It is s short quick, precise procedure.

It won't cost that much, and you'll get the tail looking like supposed to. American Britany owner, great hunting dogs, and awesome companions.
