Do you think it is good or bad for coyotes and if good for how far? Thanks

I have shot a few with a .22 pistol (targets of opportunity) and never killed one outright. Usually they go a few hundred yards with a chest hit.

A .22 mag in a rifle is a different story - that would be a fair coyote gun inside of 100 yards.

Best best - a 12 gauge shotgun with heavy BB or larger shot inside 40 yards or a .22 centerfire (or bigger) beyond.

I ran a trap line and used calls to bring them in, 22 head shot will takem out one shot, anything else will only wound. When calling we always used shotgun. As others have stated center fire will also knock them out. They are tuff critters. One shot, one kill! Jake

Will a 22 LR kill a coyote? Yes.

Is it ideal? Hardly.

Would I use one to hunt coyotes? Only under narrow circumstances. If game laws restricted carrying a centerfire during deer or elk season (like they do here if you don't have a deer or elk tag or used them up), I'd rather use a shotgun instead. With the right shell and choke, you can take coyotes at 40 to 50 yards, and much more effectively than a 22 LR.

30-06 with light bullets will work fine. At close range, though, you'll probably blow the coyote in two. Pelts won't be worth skinning.

Depends on what you want to do with the pelts,on how big you go. Friends of mine use .223 Ruger Mini 14 and Ar15s. They tell me at night around here they run in packs and is like a fast shoot fest when they bring them in.

I may go with them some night,my Mini is a lil dusty.

Yes,have done it many times.Always head/base of neck shots out to about 75 yards w/ a Anschutz.I live in an area where they come through my property on a regular basis: I have yardage marked off from an upper window where I shoot them from and I know where my gun shoots and I have never missed and never wounded.

What blackfoot said.

Head or neck shots only, no more than 75 yards, they are quiet and don't disturb the neighbors like the center fires. I have killed many with a 22 long rifle, usually the only thing that wiggles is the tail, sometimes not even that.

I have killed mannnnnnny with my model 41 Smith (22 LR) open sites. so it depends on how close you get them. RWT and BLACKFOOT are giving you solid evidence. I liken the comparison to a Chevrolet vs. a Cadilac. Both will get you there but you are more tickled with the arrival in the Cadilac.

My third post in this thread OTOH I guess we're having a discussion so............

There's been MANY a 1500 lb steer dropped dead in his tracks with a single shot from a .22 long rifle but shot placement MUST be precise. In my experience coyotes aren't prone to stand still 20 ft away looking at you while you take careful aim.
