was able to to buy a 8lbs jug of red Dot from a club member and would like to use it for 1oz loads. Been looking for a safe and clean load data, but not seeing much using Cheddite primers. Can someone help? This is what i have to work with.
AAHS hulls
RedDot powder
Misc. 1oz wads
Cheddite primers.

Thanks, Mike.

Current Alliant technical response for primer substitution is up to 8,500 psi is OK. Based on that criteria, looking at the Alliant printed data for AAHS hull, 1 ounce shot, and CB1100-12 wad, 17 - 18 grains of red dot would be OK to substitute Cheddite primer for the W/W 209 listed. (1145 or 1200 fps) (7900 - 8600 psi)

Watch your stack height using the HS hull. Could be a tight fit with bulky powders.

Yes, it does appear based on the test results posted at the top of this reloading thread that slightly higher velocities than expected are often the norm. Unfortunately those posted test results with Red Dot and Cheddite primers are for 1 1/8 oz. loads, not 1 ounce.

Considering the published data below, substituting a Cheddite primer for the Win 209 primer for 16.5 grains of powder would be safe because of the 7,900 psi pressure (less than 8,500 psi). I would suspect both the velocity and pressure will increase with the Cheddite primer, but I also suspect the velocity and pressure would remain below the 1,200 fps recipe. Substituting CB-8100 wads will most likely produce less velocity and pressure than the wads in the recipes below (opinion only, based on other load recipe comparisons). Wad and primer substitutions can result in exponential differences in pressure as discussed many times in this forum, so be careful!

I really like Red Dot...consistent and works well for me. Has become my favorite powder. For 1 oz, here’s what I load:

16 gn Red Dot
AA HS hulls
Cheddite primers
Clay Buster 8100 wads

Never really shot 1 oz loads until everything went up in cost. So I’m trying to make the components go a little bit further. This load will turn a target inside out...the ole disappearing target trick.

Well, I loaded up 4 boxes of the Red dot 1oz loads to try out to try out and see how clean they burned. Very happy with the recipe of Aa hs hulls, 16.5 of Red dot, Chedd. Primer, Clay buster 8100 wads, 10z of #8. I see no need to up the powder as they hit hard if you do your part. Also they load well and great crimps. As a note I had to go from a #29 Mec bushing to a # 31 Bush to get the 16,2-16.5 powder drop. Thanks to all who helped me on this!

With those hulls they don't recommend less than 17gr or u might run into squib loads when it gets colder. In my old manuals (2007/2013) 17 gr with those components should yield ~1145 fps. Using the Cheddite primer with 18gr I am getting ~1235 fps.
Seems using Cheddiates and the new Red Dot running hotter going below 17 is reasonable.
Seems like a combo that needs sent in for testing.

Never too old to learn new stuff!
Thanks for the info didn't know there was a new Red Dot. Loaded the Old Red Dot since about 1970 and then switched to promo when it came out. Got an empty 15 lb cardboard drum of Red Dot that cost me 90 bucks in 1980! Wouldn't you like to see those prices now $6 a pound.
