Hello all,

I’m in the market to upgrade the current shotgun which is a Browning citori trap that was manufactured in 1978. I have noticed after shooting about 200 rounds my scores really start to drop off due to the gun not fitting me properly and the 40 year old rock solid recoil pad. I have been able to handle a browning 725 trap and have been looking really hard at the combo that is offered through guns unlimited for about 6k. Having a recoil system and the ability to make full adjustments to fit me seems like a no brainer.
Talking with more fellow shooters at these ATA events they seem to love the k/p guns. I have shot a kolar that had a price tag of 16k, I wasn’t blown away to be honest. I know everyone has their own opinions but what does a gun with a price tag of 10k even into the 20k range get you above the 725 that I have been looking at. I have been averaging 96 in 16 yrd, 89 in handi (21yrd) and a 84 in doubles, just looking for something I can improve with.
Thanks for all your thoughts and opinions.

Can supply a pfs and grip for your unit, total easy fitting lop, cast, drop, cant, pitch all adjustments.
consider upgrade plus recoil reduction, lot cheaper in long run and you don"t have the expense or trial error time frame. Ask around easy set up. PM if you are interested

I don't think you can go wrong with a Browning 725 combo for your new gun. I started off with a 725 Pro Trap O/U as my first true trap gun and it worked very well with no adverse effects and just smoke balled clays. I had always wanted a combo but was never able to get an unsingle to go with it.

Now, I shoot a Kolar Trap Max T/A high profile combo that just fits me better. I have only got 300 rounds thru it to date due to the weather but very impressed so far.

My Browning has a fixed rib but the new ones are adjustable and the improved adjustable comb system is much better. I'm not sure I would go with the Gracoil Recoil system as I have read complaints of how the stock slides on you face during recoil. After a few hundred round they are looking for a way to stop the abrasion. I never had any recoil issues with my 725 as it shot pretty soft.

Yeah, I still have my 725 and plan on keeping it for a back up, it is a good gun.

If you are looking at Kolars, shop around for a used T/C combo. They are the original Kolar combo with the lower rib unsingle that you might prefer over the Max T/A coming from a Browning. They have been trending around the 7k price range.

A Browning is what I call a "lifetime gun". It'll last longer than you do if you take care of it. They have been around for a very long time, parts are available, and any competent gunsmith can work on it. That's all great... if the thing fits you. All the previous posters have laid out the various methods of making the gun fit you. Wonderful.

Suppose you're like me. I went through all that only to find the Browning still leaving an abrasion on my cheek. I wasn't the greatest shooter to start with, imagine how bad my scores sucked when I started lifting my head because of the issue with my cheek.

So, what's a guy to do? I started looking at different stocks: custom, PFS, blah, blah blah. By the time it would be all said & done, I'd have $10K in a $3K gun... how about NO, not doing it. After shooting a few rounds through a "K" gun with a rollover stock, a "P" gun and a CG, what do you think happened? There ya go... I upgraded, and sold that Browning... that I just had to admit I couldn't shoot.

To answer the question:
what does a gun with a price tag of 10k even into the 20k range get you
Quality, reliability, adjustability. For the same reason you're probably not tooling around town in a 1987 Yugo automobile, you buy the most quality, with the most creature comforts you can afford. Just remember, this a hobby. If we were talkin' about boats, classic cars, etc $10K is like ****ing in the ocean. Play at the level you can afford.

Have your gun fitted, and hit the pattern board before you spend more bucks!
Totally agree. We are trying to build connections with guns and extend our limbs. It is similar to car racing. A fitted seat is far more important than 100+ HP on the engine. The interfaces (such as stocks/forearms for shotguns and racing seats for cars) should fit us well.

I went with a 725 combo with all the bells and whistles from Guns Unlimited. After several adjustments my scores have gone up. I have three Citoris on standby that I intend to keep. I do like Kolar equipment but have a Browning budget. If you want a new gun, buy one. If you need to finance the one you desire, finance it. It's not a $80k bass boat.

I have a 725 trap combo from guns unlimited and absolutely love it, only thing i would do different is not get the graycoil put on and instead went with the rad, i have over 50,000 rounds through it and have changed firing pins once and some new springs and it has performed flawless I believe it is a lot of gun for the money

If your issue is really related to recoil. I suggest you look at purchasing a PFS stock from "Target Shotguns Inc." Just google the name and look at the totally adjustable stocks with built in recoil reducers. They should make a grip for this stock that will bolt right onto your current shotgun. Only now you have one of the best recoil reducers. Your stock is totally adjustable for Length of Pull. It will have a built in adj. comb and a adj. butt plate as well. You have a choice of wood or plastic stocks, with two different comb styles as well. No Level of shotgun is going to shoot better than the shotgun you have been shooting for that many years. I expect a adj. Rib shotgun is just going to cause you more problems. Good Luck to Ya. break em all jeff

A bt-99 would be perfect for him.
Ok so what would be perfect about a BT 99 for a guy who shoots doubles and wants to move to a combo gun?? You say you have several Browning 725s what trap models do you have so that you can relate fit--feel and swing performance to the OP???
