I'm getting ready to have some stock work done...and am curious what other shooter's LOP is.

Please post your height, weight, what gun you shoot and your length of pull.....

Thanks..Stan

Mine:
32" Browning 725 Sporting
14-3/8" lop
6 feet tall
200 lbs.
"Pad only" modifications currently. (see post #14 for tally and additional questions)

You provided only some of the things that affect the best LOP for a shooter. Here are some others:

1) How directly the shooter faces targets when he or she shoots. If you shoot a shotgun like a rifle with your shoulders nearly aligned with the direction of the shot, you will need a longer LOP than if you face targets more directly.

2) If the length of your neck, the height of your gun mount couples with the drop at the heel stock dimension requires you to lean your neck forward to put your cheek on the comb, it will require a longer stock than you would need when using a more square stance.

3) If the pitch on your stock has the bottom "toe" of the recoil pad protruding too far so it makes contact with your shoulder well before the top of the recoil pad at the end of your mount, you will nee a longer LOP to keep your thumb from bashing your nose as recoil buries the toe in your shoulder.

4) Shooters shooting a low gun disciplines such as FITASC usually want a slightly reduced LOP to facilitate quick gun mounts.

Thanks for that Rollin.. but I'm not trying to provide any information that affects the best LOP for a shooter.

I'm just curious what average Joe Trapshooter has for a lop.

How he came to establish his lop is another can of worms.

In an off topic mode..I came across an oddity today.. Two identical Browning Sporting 725"s except for LOP. One was 14-1/4" lop the other was 15" . I shot both of them one after the other. The 14-1/4" is one I am test fitting before making a decision on how to have the stock cut for a recoil reducer.

I shot them both very well... That's very unusual for me because I have never been able to shoot a 15" lop .

6'-6", 245 lbs, 18-1/2" x 37" dress shirt, K-80 w/32" barrels, 15-3/8" LOP. (But I can pretty much shoot anything with LOP's from 14-1/2" to 16" as long as the grip to trigger reach is good and comb height is close.)

Hello StansCustoms,

Several shooters have their normal LOP for warm weather shooting in a tee shirt,
Then when wearing a jacket in cold weather they use a thinner spacer at the butt plate.

They more or less keep the same gun fit under all conditions but their measurements
will vary from time to time . You can also adjust LOP , it doesn't have to be fixed.

6'3" or 6'4"
210 lbs.
Cynergy Classic Trap
15"

I checked my field gun, a Franchi Model 1000 lightweight, and the lop is 16". It feels more natural, but if I lengthen the lop on the Cynergy, it feels like it is too long. The different stock dimensions, and especially the grips, call for different lengths of pull.

Edit: Both stocks are factory, but the Franchi was fitted by a master gunsmith many years ago. He bent it for more cast off, as well as raising the comb, changed the angle of the butt, added .75" with spacers, and installed a Pachmayr XXX pad. The Cynergy was lengthened .75" with spacers, and a KickEez installed.

Interesting..here's what we have so far:

Three in the 14's
All three at 14-3/8"

Four in the the 15's
(Two at 15", One at 15-3/8", One at 15-1/2")

One at 16"

Here's some additional questions:

In the above group...how many have highly modified custom stocks such as Devault, Wenig, etc ?

How many have factory wood with practically no mods other than lop shims..or new pad?

How many have a added comb and recoil pad by Gracoil, Ken Rucker, Tron etc?

How many have modified factory wood with Soft Touch, Slick Slide or other sliding comb recoil reducers?

Other ?

Please ad to your existing post so we can see each individual's information in one spot.

Thanks for your participation everyone....hope to see others chime in as well.

Best regards...Stan

Add: I am a left-handed shooter, I am using a factory ambi #7 Krieghoff stock, adjustable comb hardware has been modified to allow flattening out the slope, ISIS recoil unit with adjustable butt-pad for LH toe out. Final dimensions are: LOP: 15-3/8"; DaC: 37mm, DaMC:42mm; DaH: 72mm; Cast: neutral (0 mm); LH Toe: 6mm.

PS: I am primarily a Sporting Clays and FITASC shooter (FITASC rules require low gun, Sporting allows either) who shoots both pre-mounted and low gun or even cheat-mount depending on sporting presentations, so my needs may be different than for a dedicated trap or skeet shooter.

I'm sorry, but what is the point of this again ?
No point...just information I'm interested in.

...however I'm deciding on what I'm going to do on a gun that is particularly difficult to add a reducer to ...because of the way the factory adjustable comb is cut ...and the lop that I would like to have.

Not that this has a thing to do with the questions. After having one gun professionally fitted years ago , and having a well equipped shop, I've fitted several of my own guns successfully since then.

I know what fits and works for me... I'm just curious what works for others.

I've got plenty of spare time ..and am not above trying something different....I know a lot of young champions shoot very long lop's, which is puzzeling to me how they make it work as well as they do...and a ...and a...so on.

Thanks...Stan

Stan- No worries about installing the SoftTouch recoil reduction system around your factory adjustable comb. We can install the SoftTouch system, no problem. Give us a call. I can answer ALL of your questions and work out all the details.
