I have about 1000 once fired Federal Premium GM plastic hulls that I have just shot this fall. They are red with a slight rib on the outside diameter, also have Fed GM paper hulls. PM me if you are interested.
The last runs of the Fed GM smooth hull had the problem of the tube breaking off or separating from the brass and lodging in the barrel. The first I heard of it was couple of years at the Golden West Grand. Shooter was shooting factory smooth GM. After that heard of a few more on the internet.
The next year Federal switched back to the rib GM. Without even a word that a problem exists. I guess when you only get a few every 10,000 shells, the bean counters figure it would be cheaper to just settle any cases as they come up, rather than recalling the smooth hull.
So unless you know the smooth hull is old stock, I would stick with the ribbed GM for reloading.
