What are your thoughts on a Winchester Model 50 12 ga. 2 3/4 cham. for a first trap gun for a new shooter? Good or bad I would like your opinion and why. The gun was made in 1955 and very well taken care of. Thank you! Michelle

I have a Model 50 and it is very soft shooting but the only problem with it is that it throws the empties so far that it is annoying to the other shooters. These guns have to be kept in time by adjusting a large screw inside the stock cavity under the recoil pad until the bolt will just stay open but no more.

Miketmx - "These guns have to be kept in time" can you explain how a person would know if the gun is getting out of time? I have read about these guns timing needing to be adjusted, but don't really understand. Thank you so much for your help. Michelle

Mike, one properly set up to shoot trap with would have a wire catcher for spent hulls.

If your gun is adjusted properly, there are ways of cutting down the distance it throws spent hulls in addition. That is, if the adjustment doesn't reduce the distance alone.

Mine has about the same felt recoil as does my Rem 1100. Adding dead weight cuts the felt part even more.

A trap model will have the comb of the stock parallel with the barrel.

I would suggest another gun, unless you like taking it apart every time you shoot. The floating chamber needs to be wiped off, if neglected the end of the piec will become pitted. Don't ask me how I know this.
