Watching videos of the ISSF trap / skeet events from Moscow. Seeing a number of shooters griping the fore stock with their index finger pointing downrange parallel to the barrel. Considering that the fore stock hand should be supporting and not guiding, what the purpose of this (to me) rather uncomfortable and very awkward grip?

Where ever you hold your finger, a light touch on the forearm is recommended.

I was taught, by my good ole Uncle Frank, that when you point your finger, whether on the bottom or on the side of the forearm, it releases pressure on the wrist and allows you to better cradle the gun more comfortably.
