Not many people know about it - until now - but Dr. Longshot taught Yeager a very important lesson. Not how to fly, of course, but how to lead targets. If it hadn't been for Gary teaching Chuck how to shoot, Yeager probably never would have become an ace.
In fact, Yeager was so appreciative of Gary's help that the last plane he flew in combat was named "Glamorous Gary", and had Dr. Longshot's pinup photo on the nose. The enemy pilots were so busy laughing when they saw it that Yeager was able to pick them off easily.
Yeager said he would certainly have been a triple-ace if the armaments officers would have followed Gary's instructions on bullet speed, but naturally they thought they knew more about that stuff than the greatest living ballistics expert. Like the ATA, the Air Force just wasn't ready to acknowledge that Gary really has a doctorate in long-shooting!
