Which is better - 6 or 8 point crimp

With my recent acquisition of a 16 ga I am starting to reload this gauge - especially due to the scarcity and high prices of factory new shells. I ordered some (new) Fiochi primed hulls. Since the hulls have never been loaded there is no crimp pattern established. Given the choice/option will I be better off establishing the crimp on the first loading as a 6 point or 8 point ?

Also, I don’t know for certain what brand of primers are in the hulls. Should I assume a 209 or equivalent ? Lastly, any suggestion on powder type and load.
Thanks in advance

Two generous Trapshooter forum gents sent me a care package with some mixed head stamp hulls so I have some that are 8 and some that are 6 point. If there is no difference I thought I would go with an 8 point crimp. My question might be does an 8 point work the case mouth more than a 6 point and, therefore, cause greater hull deterioration or is there no discernment difference ?

And, in researching loads for the 16 ga, I don’t see the Fiochi hull listed. Is there an equivalent hull in a Winchester, Remington, etc regarding case capacity and interior ?

As two above me have stated, the wads you have are to small of diameter at base to provide a good deal. Maybe in warm weather with larger flaked powders you will be able to use them but about your only powder that I can think of off hand is maybe 800X that possibly will create acceptable loads in cooler weather.

If you purchased the hulls from Graf and Son they would be the ones to correctly tell you which primer (615 or 616) is in the hulls. It's one or the other.

Also Fiocchi hulls have a prevalent habit of sticking in my 16ga model 12's and others I have owned. Have had the chambers slicked up and didn't seem to help much. But if just shooting trap that won't matter to you I guess. They also don't seem to last very long. A time or two.

Don't have a clue what's up at 16ga.com. I'd send an email request telling them.

I see someone else but a link to Ballistic Products downloadable 16ga manual. It will benefit you greatly.

Those hulls are a use once and pitch hull so don't worry about which primer to use. When you fire them the plastic just in front of the brass/steel weakens and the second loading attempt usually results in the hull bulging when you crimp it. As far as 6 or 8 segment crimp the 8 takes up more room internally for smaller pellets and the 6 is for the larger pellets.

Your best bet would be to buy new Federal shells they are the best of what's still available in 16 ga. PM me if you have any questions.

I’ve done some searching for Federal shells without any success unless I want $30 a box hunting loads with steel shot. As always, I seem to have pickEd the worst time to get into 16 ga ownership and ammo needs. 🙄 Never thought I would have this much trouble finding hulls or shells. 🤞for a better 2021 !

I can get 4 or 5 loads out of Cheddite or Fiocchi hulls.
If you are crushing the hull on reloading, your reloader is not set correctly for your stack height. The steel base is rather flimsy on these Euro hulls. I have had some distort on removing fired primers.
The only current hulls that 16 gauge CB AA clone wads fit properly are Remington game hulls.
Wishing you a much better 2021, in all respects.
