What would you do differently if you just started from scratch financially but had the knowledge you have now? Or put another way if you were to help a loved one or great friend break into the sport what would you recommend?

Examples:
I'd start with a high end multi thousand trap gun.
I'd start with a semi-auto gas gun to get rid of as much recoil as possible.
I'd use a high rib (or low rib) gun.
I'd shoot 7/8 or 1 ounce loads.

This isn't a loaded question. I'm just curious what different answers we will get. You can also answer this question by what you WOULD NOT do again as well (ported barrels, forced cones, high ribs, etc) which is just as valid.

Thanks,
Carlo

Would not buy dozens of different shotguns.

Would buy a Browning BT-99 and a Browning Citori XT with Monte Carlo stock (or a Perazzi TM1 and MX-8 or a Krieghoff KX-5 and a K-80).

But not dozens of shotguns.

And that would be it.

That would depend on the individual , male, female , youngster, their physical limitations , their financial resources and how serious about the sport? Real competition or just a few days with their friends having fun at a local club.

My first target gun should have been an 1100 trapgun with an extra Skeet barrel.

Don't buy another target shotgun.

Don't reload. Hey, chasing empties is a PITA with an 1100.

Keep and use that gun exclusively and forever for all shotgun target sports. Yeah, that means no four-gun skeet....and no need to reload if just shooting 12 gauge.

If I could not resist and just had to buy an O/U, then buy 30" barrels on my O/U. Use it exclusively for all my shotgun targets sports....until recoil starts to bother me, then switch back to the 1100.

Run away and cover my ears when anyone tries to tell me 'reloading is enjoyable'.

Great answer and I bet a lot of us feel that way at times!

Do you not know what you are? Male/Female? Sorry couldn't resist the joke. How about you specifically, what would you do differently if you could start again knowing what you know now?
Would of taken up competitive eating.
Didn't I already see you over here? Trapshooters with Six-pack abs.

Would buy a Kolar or Krieghoff, and then see Dennis Devault for a custom stock.

I've asked this of many "older gentleman" at clubs I frequent in candid conversations and got responses that they wouldn't have invested as much $ in the guns they shoot which provide little more than prestige (as they put it) by name or the furniture (which they thought was important) and would probably shoot a Beretta semi to get lower recoil. When asked why they didn't do this they more or less shrugged there shoulders and said they already had $ invested. I also heard from many that an auto was "looked down upon" from the trap community and you weren't serious unless you shoot a break open.

To me this just seems "old school". Granted some purist might not like the guy on the left pelting shells at them but anyone who has been shooting knows to step aside or back when someone is shooting a semi next to them on the left without a shell catcher. It's pretty common place anymore. Mateer of fact trap is one of the only shotgun sports where a shell catcher is of any use for a semi. the shell catcher is of use in skeet, 5 stand or sporting clays.

Nothing, I've had a blast(pun intended). I have met so many great people over the last 11 years and learned a ton. The people of this sport are what keeps me coming back.
Awesome

So do you shoot this now? If not why not?

Would have had an adjustable comb and a whole lot more money to be able to shoot as much as I wanted.
Sport is just to expensive if you also want home, wife, kids, etc etc
Never have been comfortable with what you have to spend to do this competively and if you don't spend it you will probably never rise to the top, my 2 cents.

I'd take up internet porn while drinking Wawa coffee.

No, seriously, I'd have tried to find an instructor, and got a lesson. There are no lack of opinions on ANY subject at a gun club, but when you're starting out opinions aren't quite as important as instructions in the basics.

Where and how to stand, hold points and where to focus your eyes. All learned at the school of hard knocks, while picking up bad habits left & right. I'm still paying the price with crappy scores. How about range and game rules? Nope, figured it out all by myself, by surfing the web.

So, I watched a few rounds of trap at the local range and figured "hell I can do that" and proceeded to go out with my semi-auto field gun and no real idea what I was doing.

That being said, I don't know of a club local to me (S NJ) that you can find a coach/instructor at. Many other sports (golf, tennis) the clubs have a pro to get you a foundation.

Hands-down, without a doubt the best move I've ever made to increase my shooting and scores.

I would have got a gun that fit correctly and not traded or sold over and over. I would stay away from semi autos as I've tried about 10 berettas and rems and couldn't shoot them. So I guess get a good break gun that fits and kept. Spend money on shells not different guns.
