Bologna, it was designed by capitalist exploitation of the sugar addiction created when the Spanish discovered Cane Sugar in use by the indigenous peoples of the new world and expropriated it to Europe at a huge profit. Candy plants were cranking out sugar bombs full tilt and Halloween was created to clear their inventories of spring-summer bombs in the fall so they had room for the winter-spring sugar bomb output.Halloween was a holiday designed to put science over superstition, good over evil and scrutinize the death process as normal and natural.
It was designed to teach courage in the face of evil and laughter in the face of fear. If you can laugh at superstition you won't be afraid of it.

Coca and tobacco also came from the new world along with hot peppers and potatoes plus a couple other foodstuffs.Of course candy was a secondary offshoot enterprise better than beggars cakes-- (better sugar addiction than other addictions like cacao to the Aztecs) Life was meant to be sweet and savored like candy. All the better. What are your references? I have several.
