The American Culture War – Weinstein Takes on the NRA
By D.J. Wilson – In the words of William F. Buckley Jr., “Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.” That’s a sweeping generalization, but there is much evidence to demonstrate that this is true. Attempts to deny political, social and economic freedoms are part of a broad liberal plan to undermine traditional values. Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein is proof of “liberal intolerance”. He put up his knuckles and is threatening to fight the NRA Hollywood-style and may possibly challenge your second amendment rights.
Recently slamming the National Rifle Association, Mr. Weinstein made remarks on The Howard Stern Show to announce a new anti-NRA movie titled The Senator’s Wife starring Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep. Weinstein, co-founder of The Weinstein Company and Miramax Films, describes the movie as “the new Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” This is in reference to Frank Capra’s film starring James Stewart about a man’s fight against political corruption in Washington. Weinstein said “they’re (the NRA) going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.”
It has been suggested that The Senator’s Wife will focus on the powerful gun lobby’s efforts to defeat legislation introduced following the deeply tragic Aurora and Newtown shootings. President Obama blames intimidation of senators as a reason for the legislation’s failure and states the gun lobby and its allies “willfully lied” over a big brother gun registry. When it comes to gun control, it’s not a cut and dried issue. Emotions run high and House Republicans walk political tightropes. They face pressure from constituents and the gun lobby in an era of public distrust of a President who favors federal control. Like fellow fundraising star George Clooney, Harvey Weinstein joined the ranks of Hollywood moguls to host an “elite” event at his home for president Obama, to the reported tune of $35,000 per person. As a staunch supporter of Obama, it is likely the President’s actions will be portrayed as strictly “angelic” in Weinstein’s production.
In his interview with Stern, Weinstein says “I don’t think we need guns in this country, and I hate it, and I think the NRA is a disaster area.” This statement clearly challenges second amendment rights. He discusses his project Mila 18, an adaptation of Leon Uris’ book set in German-occupied Warsaw, Poland before and during World War II. Weinstein says it’s “not a Holocaust story as much as it’s an adaptation of Jews with guns” and that he would “find a gun” if faced with the horrors of the Holocaust. This is ironic since he amassed much of his fortune producing films which include graphic violence and/or sex. Movies like Kill Bill, Halloween, Piranha 3DD and Rambo are examples. In fact, Rambo has one of the most ferocious gun fights ever seen on the screen. It appears Mr. Weinstein isn’t anti-violence or guns since he’s made his millions glorifying gun violence. Perhaps he’s just another liberal more interested in politically “brainwashing” or “bullying” those who disagree with him on the subject of gun control.
