In general, would it be safe to use today's .410 shells in a 1949 Stevens 410 SxS?

Of course. I would bet the chambers are just as thick as a 12.

What you have to watch out for are old guns with Damascus or Twist barrels, but I don't think the 410 was around back then.

SAAMI was founded in 1926, so i think you're pretty safe.
