Obama's Kenyan-born uncle allowed to remain in US

Onyango Obama, President Barack Obama's Kenyan-born uncle, arrives at U.S. Immigration Court for a deportation hearing Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013 in Boston.

By Denise Lavoie, The Associated Press

President Barack Obama's Kenyan-born uncle, who ignored a deportation order more than two decades ago, was granted permission to stay in the U.S. on Tuesday.

Judge Leonard Shapiro made the decision after Onyango Obama, 69, testified that he had lived in the U.S. for 50 years, been a hard worker, paid income tax and been arrested only once.

Asked about his family in the U.S. on Tuesday, he said, "I do have a nephew." Asked to name the nephew, he said, "Barack Obama, he's the president of the United States."

Onyango Obama, the half brother of the president's late father, has lived in the U.S. since the 1960s. He was ordered to leave the country in 1992, but remained.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shapiro cited a law that entitles immigrants who are "out of status" to become permanent residents if they arrived in the U.S. before 1972, maintained continuous residence and are of good moral character.

Onyango Obama testified he came to the U.S. from his native Kenya in 1963 and has not been back since. He called America the "land of opportunities."

His immigration status did not become public until his arrest for drunken driving in 2011 in Framingham, just west of Boston. After his arrest, he allegedly told police, "I think I will call the White House."

Asked about the exchange by a prosecutor Tuesday, he said he might have said that, but he couldn't recall.

Earlier this year, the Board of Immigration Appeals sent the case to the Executive Office for Immigration Review for reassessment.

Margaret Wong, Obama's Cleveland-based immigration attorney, called him a "wonderful older gentleman."

"He has earned his privilege to stay in the United States. He has been here for 50 years," she said Tuesday before the hearing.

The White House said it expected the case to be handled like any other immigration case.

In the drunken driving case, Obama admitted to sufficient facts, meaning he did not plead guilty but acknowledged prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him. A judge continued the case for one year without a finding, saying the charge would be dismissed if Obama did not get arrested again during that time. Wong said Obama has successfully completed that program.

In the president's memoir, "Dreams from My Father," he writes about his 1988 trip to Kenya and refers to an Uncle Omar, who matches Onyango Obama's background and has the same date of birth.

He is the second Obama family member to be found living illegally in the United States. His sister and the president's aunt, Zeituni Onyango, was granted asylum in 2010 after her first asylum request in 2002 was rejected and she was ordered deported in 2004.

She did not leave the country and continued to live in public housing in Boston. Her status was revealed just days before Obama was elected in November 2008. At the time, then-candidate Obama said he did not know his aunt was living here illegally and that he believes laws covering the situation should be followed.

And yet the Administration seeks to deport a German couple who came to the US because they were afraid that the public school system in Germany was corrupting their child. This was their offense.

Let's start using the "I" word (Impeachment) and get the people used to hearing it. While there seems to be no taste for using it, there is no question that there is more than sufficient cause and that it is the only answer to getting the US out from under this Emperor in the next 3 years. There is plenty of cause just not enough courage.

What are the Republicans afraid of? Are they afraid that the blacks won't vote for them? Well, they won't anyway. A minority of the US population, 14%(?) keep the politicians in terror. Man up! Do the rightn thing for America or get a job in the private sector, pumping gas.

The Impeachment and subsequent failure to convict of William Jefferson ( Slick Willie ) Clinton took Impeachment as an effective control out of the tool box. Unless there are sufficient votes to convict in the Senate there is absolutely no point in the House bringing an Impeachment forward. The only thing left is the ballot box next November and if ( let us ALL pray not ) that fails to reign in this out of control Government the only thing left is revolution. There are those in scholarly positions, left and right leaning, that see revolt as a possibility and neither side or, for that matter, no SANE person, wishes for a revolurtion. Death, destruction, and misery are the only certain outcome of revolution.

At least he had or has some type of job. I think it was working in a liquor store when he was arrested, I may be mistaken as it was a while ago. The bigger crime is O'Bammy's aunt living in Boston in subsidized housing. When it drew the attention of the local newspapers she was moved to better housing and food allowance still all on the taxpayers wallet. Don't you wish you had a nephew like O'Bozo. GOD help us, we are done as the country we all knew.

Obama Will Never Be Found At The Center Of A Lie: White House Throws Staffers Under The Bus To Shield President From Kenyan Uncle Omar Bombshell

December 5, 2013 by Ben Bullard

President Barack Obama isn’t to blame for a festering lie about his past – his handlers are.

On Thursday, The Boston Globe reported that Obama said he did live with his Kenyan uncle, Onyango “Omar” Obama, for three weeks just before young Barack began his career as a Harvard Law student. The White House had told the press in 2011 that the President had never met the man.

That was an inadvertent lack of diligence on the part of Obama’s staff, said Press Secretary Jay Carney Thursday. “Back when this arose, [White House staff] looked at the record, including the President’s [autobiographical] book, and there was no evidence that they had met,” Carney said.

“However,” The Daily Caller quotes Carney as saying, “nobody spoke to the President.”

“I thought it was the right thing to do to go ask him,” Carney continued. “[A]nd the President said that he, in fact, had met Omar Obama when he moved to Cambridge for law school.”

Flash back to January 7, 2012, when The Boston Globe ran a story about Omar’s legal travails, set against the backdrop of the Obamas’ common Kenyan heritage.

A solemn figure as he strides into his court appearances, [Omar] Obama never married or had children during the years he has been in the United States, according to his lawyer, P. Scott Bratton. He lives with a Kenyan family in Framingham near the liquor store where he has worked as a clerk for 10 years. Although he has a vast number of relatives living near Lake Victoria in western Kenya, many know nothing of him. He has never met his famous nephew, according to the White House.

“The White House never moved to correct the record, until the President’s famously private uncle took the witness stand in Boston immigration court two days ago,” the Globe reported Thursday.

Why not? At the start of an election year, wouldn’t the President want to avoid any political landmines – particularly from the birther crowd – by getting in front of misinformation as quickly as possible instead of letting stories like this sit dormant indefinitely? That he kept quiet about a Boston Globe report that surely must have come to his attention, courtesy of anxious handlers looking toward November 2012, calls into question the President’s own role in allowing the lie to make it through to the Globe’s reporter.

The 2012 article also mentions that Omar had been living illegally in the U.S. for decades. Omar had a deportation hearing earlier this week – an event brought about by his August 2011 drunk driving arrest in Framingham, Massachusetts. At the hearing, Omar revealed that the future President had, in fact, stayed with him before attending Harvard.

Omar was granted legal residency by an immigration judge Tuesday, thanks to his “good moral character and a section of federal law that allows him to get a green card because he arrived before 1972.”
