Discussion Starter #1 (Edited)
With the spring turkey season upon us and hunters discussing which turkey load is "best", I thought I'd post some of my turkey load pattern numbers. Hopefully, this information will allow hunters to make smart choices when it comes to turkey loads and encourage all turkey hunters to shoot a few patterns to determine the maximum effective range for their gun/choke/load combo!

I did much of this patterning several years ago, so some of these loads have been discontinued and there are several new loads are on the market that I haven't patterned. Anyway, you get the idea.

The 12-gauge 3-inch loads were shot through a Remington 870 Special Purpose shotgun and the 12-gauge 3 ½-inch loads were shot through a Remington 870 Super Magnum shotgun. A Remington Turkey Super Full Extended choke was used for all lead loads and a Remington Hevi-Shot Super Full Extended choke was used with all steel and tungsten-based loads.

Pattern testing was accomplished by using 48-inch x 48-inch pattern paper with a turkey head-and-neck target placed in the center of each pattern sheet prior to the patterning shot; yardages were measure with a tape from muzzle to target; and pattern counts, pattern percentages and Skull/Cervical Vertebrae (S/CV) hits were the average from five patterns.

In-shell pellet count averages were the result of cutting open and counting the pellets from five shells out of the same box/lot as the pattern loads. These in-shell pellet counts allowed for true pattern percentage calculations.

Remember, an effective turkey gun/load/choke combo needs to have enough pellets to provide sufficient pattern density and pellets with adequate penetrating energy to reliably penetrate a turkeys skull and/or cervical vertebra at the yardage used!

Here's my short take on this topic.
When using a 12-gauge for turkeys... out to 30 yards "most all" turkey loads with a full choke will be 100% effective, out to 40 yards "many" turkey loads with a full or tighter choke can be 100% effective, out to 50 yards "some" turkey loads with a tight full turkey choke may be 100% effective, and out to 60 yards "very few" turkey loads with a tight full turkey choke are 100% effective.

Rogers Sporting Goods still has the Federal Heavyweight Turkey Loads on sale at a great price. Just the shot in these Federal Heavyweight loads is a great buy at $14.99 per 5 shells. You can't buy HW13 12g/cc shot cheaper than you can buy the 15g/cc shot in these loaded Federal Heavyweight shells.

There is a huge difference in the performance of FHW 15g/cc shot and lead shot.

Federal Premium Mag-Shok Heavyweight Turkey Shotshells, 10GA 3 1/2" 2oz

20 ga 2-3/4" #7 shot

12 ga 3-1/2" #7 shot
Federal Premium Mag-Shok Heavyweight Turkey Shotshells, 12GA 3 1/2" 1 7/8oz 1300FPS

Check out the penetration range and pellet counts between these two 3" 1-5/8 oz loads of lead #5 shot and Federal Heavyweight #7 shot. Federal Heavyweight shot is advertised to be 35% denser than lead shot.
1300 fps lead #5 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 55.6 yards with about 281 pellets in 1-5/8 oz.
1300 fps Fed HW #7 shot gets 1.50" of gel penetration at 75.1 yards with about 356 pellets in 1-5/8 oz.

I have been using Winchester shells for years. When they came out with the Long Beard shell that was icing on the cake. Took my nicest bird ever a couple of years ago with my Rem 11-87 turkey gun with Long Beard #5s in 3 inch at 62 yards. I wouldn't normally shoot that far but it was the end of the season and I figured I could follow up fast with a second or third shot. Needless to say, Ol Tom dropped and did not even flutter. The hens couldn't figure out what happened. I held on him for quite a while but he never moved. When I finally stepped out to where the hens could see me, they decided to leave.

I switched from hevi shot mag blend to Long Beard two years ago.

Did not think it possible but Long Beard shoots further and better patterns than hevi shot.
