Sure a lot different than now days. Crocs or sandals tank top and shorts belt and shell box holder. Some of the better dressed wear a vest and a shamrock mesh hull bag and similar clothing depending of weather conditions.

If we had to dress like that to shoot, there would be less shooters then we have today. I'v seen fellows in bibs, no tee or shoes. Only shot with one fellow in a tie. He was from England I believe.
It's all relative... we've traded bowlers, derbies and top hats for ball caps and visors... shooting attire has become less formal, office dress is less formal... to some point not a good thing... some dress like bumbs... clean attire preferred.

Look at flying... we used to dress up and now some folks fly in pajamas...

At our range... no shirt, no shoes, no service...

Rolla's "Hand Protector" was patented May 13, 1889, but the concept may have been borrowed from English shooters.
