Very nice post. Didn’t mind one second that coached and watched my kids shoot. Never bothered me to spend countless hours making shot and reloading. My son still shoots league nights with the old man. And every Monday night we shooter is special. Daughter comes home and still asked to go shoot some trap. Special! Now they have started to take a interest in golf later life. So now maybe we’ll spend the whole day together. Special!!!

So true! My son has been shooting 3 years. Everything about this post is spot on. Was thinking about selling the gun he started with at 11 years old. After reading the last paragraph, I think we’ll just keep it!

If You Teach a Child To Shoot…..

If you teach a child to shoot, then they are going to want a gun.
You’ll buy them the best gun you can afford, and then they will probably want ammo to go with it.

Then they will spend hours begging you to go to the range and shoot with them, even though you may want to sit on the couch and watch tv. They will insist, and their insistence will win.
And when they find a team, they will want a jersey, a range bag, fancy safety glasses…… and then life as you know it will end!

There will be no more lazy weekends watching tv. You will see more sunrises then you ever thought possible. Every spare minute of your time will be spent hauling guns, ammo, equipment, and a sleepy child all over tarnation for hours at a time to the next tournament.

And your house will be a mess and your car will be dirty all because you taught a child to shoot.

Your weekends will be spent freezing or burning to death on a fold up chair. Their weekends will be spent learning safety and responsibility, gaining confidence, making friends, learning a new skill, and having fun.

And you will be there the day they hit 25, 50, 100, and 200 straight or run 5,3, and 1 second courses, and they will make you so proud. The other parents will congratulate you but you will feel weird saying thank you because it’s not you, it’s all them that did it.
And right before your eyes your small child will be transformed from the “baby” that could barely hold up a gun into a responsible, safe, proficiently shooting athlete.

When you teach a child to shoot you give them more than just a skill. You give them a sport, a talent, hopes and dreams, friends, a new family, a place to learn about life, room to grow as a person where they can push their limits, bravery and courage, and a lifetime of memories. And they will have all these things simply because you taught a child to shoot.

Because you taught a child to shoot, you too will develop new/lifelong friendships, developed solely from the same passion for the sport and the love of your team. You will root together and spew pg13 things from your mouths together because you taught a child to shoot.

Then one day many years from today, your child will be going through their own gun safe and will come across their very first gun. They will pick it up and realize instantly that when you taught them to shoot, you also gave them a childhood that they will never forget. Then the next time they see you they will hug you, and your eyes may leak because you realize that everything You gave up along the way was worth it.

My son's have also been involved in the Boy Scout program since they were in grade school, the growth and maturity that comes along with that journey is akin to their shooting journey. After all, God gave us as parents the opportunity to raise these gifts, He did that for a reason, not for our glory but HIS. Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it.(Proverbs 22:6)

I've been actively involved in our High School Clay Target team for better than four years. The jubilation I've seen when the young man or woman becomes consistent is priceless. My son's have also been involved in the Boy Scout program since they were in grade school, the growth and maturity that comes along with that journey is akin to their shooting journey. After all, God gave us as parents the opportunity to raise these gifts, He did that for a reason, not for our glory but HIS. Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it.(Proverbs 22:6)

I coach 4-H Shotgun (mainly Trap) and the first 3 sessions are concentrated in safe gun handling, how to walk with a shotgun, how to properly load and unload, how to wear gear, range safety but most important aspect they learn is Respect.
Respect at the range, Respect on gun safety, Respect among peers and parents love it.
