For the most part, the Ithaca and Winchester import TM-1's had top thread tubes; what Briley calls 2nd gen.

The later Rome, NY import TM-1's had what Briley calls 3rd gen, bottom thread tube.

Stu Wright, and most others refer to these as 1st and 2nd gen, respectively.

Usually the correct tube can be obtained by description, for example TM -1 top thread.
