SKB perceptions

I am a new SKB owner. The 720 Field in the special edition. 20ga model. Seems that people see the shotgun from a distance and will remark how pretty it is. But then they ask me what it is, and when I say its a new SKB, they kind of grunt a little and immediately lose interest in it. Am I missing some sort of negative issue with that brand, do they have a poor history? Many of the grunters in disgust are Browning or Beretta owners, who will tell me I could have bought a Browning Field grade gun for about the same price. I say to them, "I have a browning already and wanted to try an SKB." Seems like I am a lepper carrying an SKB on the skeet field. What am I missing?

Am I missing some sort of negative issue with that brand,
Its been that way for a long long time. They were doing the same over 20 years to shooters with SKB's. The Japanese models were quite good really. The service dept. was 10 times better than Browning's too. The Turkish made SKB's today. I am not sure about yet. But, Don't let it discourage you. Just learn to shoot better, until you beat the pants off of all of them.
The biggest question most of us should be asking you!!!! Is how Do You Like Shooting your New SKB shotgun!!!! What do you like about it???, what do you dislike about it??? Besides the flack the skeet shooters have shown you, with there grunting attitude. I for one would like to know. break em all Jeff

I love my new SKB. I have a Weatherby Orion and a Browning 725, and honestly I like the SKB the best. It seems to point the best although I only have put about 275 shells through it. Last 2 rounds of skeet were 23 and 24. I am not a great skeet shooter but getting better all the time. I like the trigger pull and the fact that it is mechanical triggers. The thing I don't like about it, is it is super stiff to get open. I know it will break in, but sometimes I actually have to break it across my knee. I would happily buy another one at this point. But only 275 shells through it, I should wait for a couple thousand shots before I go all in.

I have never bought a gun just to please someone else. I could give a rate as$ what they think also. Rub it in when you and your SKB whoop their butts. I have an older SKB 500 and a Krieghoff plus stuff in between. Be shooting a lowly 60 year old Remington 1100 tomorrow because I can. Stick to your guns (pun intended) & shoot what you like. While the current Turkish made SKBs are not the equivalent of their Japanese made predecessors, they are the best of the Turkish shotguns. I have seen many in the hands of HS Trap shooters, and they hold up better than all the other Turkish made shotguns. Hold your head up and shoot that SKB well!

It’s made in Turkey. And although there are numerous gun manufacturers over there, there is a stigma attached. Also, SKB has spent a lot of time and effort courting the youth market.… So some people view them as a gun for younger or more inexperienced shooters.

Personally, I am rooting for them. I love the Japanese guns, and currently own 4 in various configurations. They didn’t ask for their Japanese supplier to get out of the gun making business and they had to make some tough decisions. They work very hard at customer service and most everyone who’s dealt with them is pleased.

I was fortunate enough to win a 720 SKB field in 12 gauge at the grand. Just shot a few shells through it and like it very well. Just another for me to play with. I mounts nicely and points great. Just put a real recoil pad on it today. I love my over under brownings 3 of them but the SKB will be a nice addition for me, friends and grandkids. My 9 year old shot his first ever doubles, ATA with it over the weekend.

I feel the Japanese SKB was quite a good gun! and enjoyed mine; now long gone. I have no faith in Turkish made firearms! the handguns coming out of there that I ve handled as a dealer are ususally rough in some way and no 2 seemed rough in the same way. 1 would have a so-so finish the next would have a gritty trigger pull....etc

it seems like so many firearms are made in Turkey these days. My Father-in-law has a Weatherby Orion made in turkey. After about 4k shells through it, one of the extractors broke in half. Apparently you can't buy parts on the open market for those guns, and he had to send it to an authorized repair facility. Well the repair facility wasn't able to get parts either and he waited for over 8 months to get it returned to him. That included many calls to Weatherby. Weatherby continued to tell him they were unable to get the parts from Turkey. Finally the repair facility took one off a gun they had in stock and put it on his gun. Seems absurd that they have no spare parts anywhere, and have to wait for Turkey to send them.

Plenty of newer SKB's on our High School team and those kids routinely shoot in the 24-25 range. Gun snobbery is the worst kind of snobbery. I have an Ithaca (Japanese SKB) 500 from the 70s and its rock solid - I'll be hunting with it this weekend. If we hit a trap field later in the day I'll be using it there as well. Enjoy your new gun, you lucky duck.

Pay no attention to the nay-sayers! I have a SKB 90TSS 12ga Trap gun that has THOUSANDS of round trough it and it has been FLAWLESS. Also have two SKB 690's o/u field guns in 20g and 28g. They haven't been shot a much as the trap gun, but they have been flawless as well. Wood on the trap gun is plain. The wood on the 20g 690 is very nice but not outstanding. The 28ga is EXCEPTIONAL and MUCH better than I have seen on "standard" grade Brownings and Beretta's. Fit and finish on all three is outstanding. So let em' poo-hoo your gun, most of those poo-hooer's have never owned or shot a NEWER Turkish SKB shotgun. SKB is popular with junior trap teams and many clubs have them as rental guns, so they can't be JUNK or they wouldn't be popular.

And finally, everyone has opinions, just look at the current political landscape! Enjoy your SKB, I'm betting you will be very happy with your choice. I have been with mine.

I'm a big fan of SKB's. I think they are the best guns out there for the money. I started out with a 585 then bought a new GC-7 for trap, which soon led up to a 505 28ga for skeet. Never a problem with any of them, and would recommend an SKB to anyone especially someone just starting out that may be on a budget.

Those 85 series SKB's are a very good gun. I still own a 85tss and owned a 685 trap gun back in the 90's. a club member had to have the 685 and made me a offer I could not refuse for it. as far as the Turkish gun's I have not handled or shot one. The Turks are capable of making a excellent gun ask any Prostar owner.

I have an SKB-made Ithaca 20-ga and it is a superb gun. Japanese-made SKB. I'd never sniff or grumble at one. Have fun and ignore the snobs.
