Should the ATA create a new Category: "Super Senior Vet"

4078 Views 83 Replies 52 Participants Last post by  Mike0251
It's been talked about for a long time and with the higher percentage of senior shooters populating our clubs and shoots, the time seems right. Please vote in the yes or no poll and share your thoughts. BTW, I'm 83 this summer and not able to participate in 200 target championship events any more. I think that such a classification might address some of these issues Thanks.

Just to stir the pot a bit. In this age of sexual diversity why is there still a Ladies category ?
Wait a minute, I was thinking about identifing as a womaan and declaring LadyII next time I classified. Less competition.

The Vet category only being a 5 year time frame is a little lame on the ATA’s part as far as I am concerned.
No other category has such a short time frame. Carl Brown corrected me on this, see his post a few down.
I believe it should be 65 to 75 and then you go to Sr Vet.
This would take care of a lot of folks without adding and/or taking away any other categories.
Now that being said I too think Jr Gold and Sub Vet are not necessary but I have no vote to be able to change it.
You can’t blame the shooters for using it to their advantage if they choose to do so.

I like the name Super Senior and detest Elder Class. That sounds like something dreamed up by a sociology professor. If Super Senior does not cut it, how about a Geezer Class? And I am entitled to my opinion being 82. There is a noticeable change in shooting somewhere around the age of 75 and certainly before 80. Sure, there are some good scores, but they are less frequent, and gone are the 300 bird days. My take is that we are just lucky to still be shooting.

The ATA seems adamant in their stance not to increase the number of categories, and every time the idea of dropping Sub Vets and/or Junior Gold, the answer is a resounding NO. I suggest some nose counting on their part, I think that they would be surprised at the number of 75+ shooters that are still active. My suggestion - Seniors of the ATA world unite, we have nothing to lose but our subservience to a bunch of whippersnappers.
I'd vote for Silver Geezer (75-79) and Gold Geezer (80+)...lol I'm 2 months from Silver but I probably won't shoot again...
Are we getting like Little League Baseball where everybody need to get a trophy. Trapshoting is a sport that take skill to win and not everyone has that skill what ever there age . Just be happy that you can still get out and participate.

Mike I would leave the ladies cat alone. But maybe add a 'Lite in the Loafer' class to appease the woke crowd.

Jr is 15-18. 3 yrs
Jr gold. 18-23 5 yrs
sub vet 55-65. 10 yrs
vet 65-70. 5 yrs
Sr vet. 70& up

I would like to see a category called $hitty Shooter - that way I could possibly compete.

We need a non-binary category. I think I could win if a third scoring option existed, like getting credit for almost hitting the target. LOL.

You can only select this category if you select non-binary on question 14 of the 4473 form.
No , there’s too many categories now and the expense to run shoots are high now . , Adding a category, adds trophies.
Drop some categories not needed. Sub vet, junior gold, etc, and add this one, which would actually make the game better.
A few years back I suggested that the EC consider a Bi-Polar or Manic-Depressive class, figuring that would give me a chance, but the suggestion didn't fly.

There are WAY too many categories now but I would suggest that this proposed new category be called "One foot in the grave and the other on a slippery rock:)"
Maybe divide each category into one or two eye shooter. Then split each of them into prescription glasses or plain lense!

Also for "every category" use the Biden payout plan! If you didn't pay any daily fees, target fees, or options you get reimbursed $2.25 per target thrown for you, no requirement to breaking any!
ATA will end up in as much deficit as our Government!

I voted No also dump Jr gold and Sub Vet. That's why NASCAR is the pits....they also need to go back to run what you brung.
I like the idea of less categories- I think it would be OK to get rid of Junior Gold and Sub Vet, but the ATA would be afraid of less people “chasing points.”

At 80+ years old- how many shooters at that age are going to shoots for trophies? I’m sure even the ones that are still winning at that age are going for the people they’ve met through the sport more than trophies…

Since Sr. Vet is usually the largest category at most shoots, it makes sense to split it up. I often see 1, 2, or 3 total shooters in several categories at shoots I attend with Sr Vet having 40-80 participants in that one category. I have my share of trinkets and trophies but would like to see some of my very Sr. Vets have a better chance at winning some recognition among competitive categories.
