I am down at the Silver Dollar shooting club and was watching the shoots today ( I am not shooting) A guy shot out of turn and broke the bird, a heated convesation started he wanted credit for the bird others were arguing it is a loss bird. I am just wondering what the rules are. I just picked a shotgun up after 30 years of not shooting trap but upon arriving home I will be on the trap committee at my club, this is why I am asking in the event it happens at home.

Thanks
Ray

I do it especially when I am on post 1. With my being left handed, I stand on post one with my back turned away from the other shooters because the hard left angle is hardest for me. When shooting, I either try to count the shots which is sometimes hard with shooting on fields left and right of mine or the shooter on post 5 has a voice hard to recognize or says “pull.”

Something similar happened to me although I'm right-handed. I was on peg 1 and the guy on peg 5 was continually fiddlefarting around putting his gun up and taking it down before calling for his target. After waiting what seemed an age for him to get on with the war I looked up and saw him taking his gun down so I called and broke my target. All hell let loose because I'd shot out of turn. That's how I got my 101 straight patch from @docbombay........see below.

Last week I shot with 3 first timers (in a 4 man squad) who were not familiar with firearms. It was excruciating. I was polite and patient but it wasn't my best round. My focus was on the other shooters, making sure they (and I) were safe. I didn't shoot out of turn but that's because I was watching them like a hawk. You haven't seen fiddlefarting until you've seen this crew. They took it to an art-form.

Self-preservation is high on my priorities after very nearly getting cut into two pieces many years ago by a novice skeet shooter. The full load missed me by a couple of feet fired from no more than six feet behind me.

I never shoot with beginners these days but I will coach and supervise them if asked. I did nearly lose my right eye five years ago while standing 20 yards behind a squad of trap shooters waiting my squad's turn to shoot in a CPSA registered competition The pic below was taken the next morning while I was shaving.

The CPSA's chief coach and safety officer investigated how this could have happened after I drew the incident to the club's and CPSA's attention because of future safety concerns. He put it down to a "rogue pellet" from another part of the shooting ground. "Rogue pellet" my ass! I've never been back to that shooting ground.

This is why shooters should read and familiarize themselves with the rule book. I always carry one in my shooting bag. It amazes me the number of people who do not have one or ,have not even read one . Many times I've heard people try inject what they have HEARD into a rules issue. The ATA will send out rules nooks on request any time someone ask .

Shooting a 50 bird calcutta one night a relatively new shooter on the post after me shot out of turn. I stopped squad, then shot my shot and informed him he had to reshoot his shot. After we were through, I explained the rule to him.

ATA rules - if you are shooting ATA rules, what you did was wrong and you too must reshoot your target. So the person in front of you shoots out of turn, that shooter must shoot over (when it is actually their turn). If you shoot after someone who already shot out of turn, you get to shoot your target over as well. You cannot shoot and then tell the guy before you that he has to shoot over (in proper turn). You also must shoot over when it is actually your turn

35isit made the correct call, I misread his post.

I was on the squad at The SD yesterday when the person shot out of turn took 20 minutes to convince him that is to be scored no target then we go back to the line and post three speaker doesn’t work that took 20 -25 minutes as it turned out that the controller was bad. Made it difficult to stay focused when it took almost an hour to shoot 25 targets.

If it was over by the golf pro shop it was the same person I was asking about, I am just joining the ATA as I have not shot for the past 25-30 years, with retiring I decided to take the sport up again. Thank you all for your input

yep squad shooting on 7A right in front of golf pro shop. You would think someone there could find the “no target” ruling much quicker.

I am a novice to ATA but been shooting 5-6 times a week since February, I purchased a new Fabarms Axis Gold from Mike and had Rod fit me, very happy with the gun I already ran 25 straight with it.

Question> three weeks ago in a non ATA squad I was on #5 . First set of targets, all shot and broke them. My turn, I set, yelled pulled and shot but the noise was deafening and I thought that I had a bad shell. The bird was dusted. The other shooters said shooter #1 fired simultaneously at the bird as he had his head up his ......, he laughed. I didn't, but I counted the target as it was practice. My question is what would have been the ruling if ATA registered. When we switched so I was on #1 and he was on #2, When I had the gun mounted was ready tocall pull and shoot, he started loading his gun and fidgeting. I politely asked for him to just wait till I fired. Didn't shoot a second squad with him.
Maybe I am just a crotchety old man.

he can load his gun any time if he is on station facing the traps. Excessive movement is another matter. He may NOT raise his gun or move it in a manner that will distract other shooters. Pg. 16 Par. 12 and and 14 -------12.A contestant shall place a live shell in his/her gun only when on a post facing the traps. In Singles and Handicap shooting, he/she may place only one (1) live shell in his/her gun at a time and must remove it or the empty shell(s) before moving from one post to another. In Doubles shooting, he/ she may place two (2) live shells in his/her gun at a time and must remove both live or empty shells before moving from one (1) post to another. In changing from one (1) post to another, it is highly recommended that the shooter shall not walk in front of the other competitors. -----14.A contestant may hold his/her gun in any position. The contestant must in no manner interfere with other shooters by raising his/her gun to point or otherwise create an observable distraction. 1
