Does anyone know the mfg date(s) for the S&W 17-2 revolver? No longer have my Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. Appreciate any help, eg 17-1 or 17-3 could help in narrowing it down. Just rescued it from my son in law. Thanks a lot. John

the 17-1 was 1959 to 1961
the 17-2 was 1961 to 1967

Get the serial number and we can get it closer

Interesting. I was told that the serial range K779163 t0 K848781 was used in 1968. I have a 17-3 with a SN of K844xxx that was reported to be made in 1968. Maybe a very late 17-3 from 1967?

But then again strange things happen. I have a Marlin 1894 in 357 that was not released until 1979 but the SN on the receiver is a 1978 SN.

Smith & Wesson never sent out guns in serial number order. Frames were stamped with a number and would come out of stock not in sequence. Only way to tell when it left the factory is to get a letter from Jinks and those aren't always right.

Jim R - that makes sense to me, ie that it was mfg in 1967, sat on the shelf until there was a sales order for it, which came and was done in 1968, when it was shipped, and then for S&W to enter it into their 1968 sales records. Thank you folks. Problem solved. John
