I used to work at my family's Western Auto Store and we did a fair bit of gun sales and trades, way back when.

I remember selling a few 316's and some had a generic "polychoke" and some didn't. Can't help on the lettering in the model numbers but I'll try and find some of my dad's old catalogues and get back to you if I find something.

I do remember customer's telling us that they kicked a bunch.
