What is with the checkering. Was it re-cut, never finished, or does it have some type of coloring added? Thanks, Jon

I suspect it's the lighting reflecting off the edges of the checkering. Looks to me like Mr. Goodman used a flash when taking his pics. Natural lighting outdoors would likely not show the same coloring. In fact, I'd bet that the stock's real color is darker than in the pics.
