'Leading the dance', if you will, is just one more thing / distraction to think about while shooting. I take 1 sometimes, but I prefer any other post. When someone asks me what post I want, I normally tell them to put me wherever the squad needs a gap filled "because I have to shoot from them all anyway".

Post one isn't my preferred starting point. Like henrydog I want to see a few targets which allows my eyes to adjust to the background and evaluate target height. With all that said my best scores have been when starting on post one.

I like to start on 5. Then I get the 2 posts with the hardest angles out of the way, 5 and 1. I also like starting on 1 because I am a lefty and I don't watch others birds and only have to keep track of the 4 shooters after me for one post. After that when the shooter on my left shoots I know it is my turn next.

I like to start on 1. Usually easy to get. I think mainly because I don't like going from 5 to 1. I always call to see one prior to starting.
4 is my second choice.

I usually start on P-3 . But when you start on P-1 you don't have to make the turn from P-5 to P-1 , Just straight down the line .

I nearly always start to shoot on Post #1. I would rather start on #1 than finish on it. I have to admit I have been caught out a few times over the years with a nasty hard left as my first target, but those are the breaks and if I missed it was because I was not ready when I called.
I read once that Arnold Reigger one of the great shooters from the past said you should always start on #4 if you can and I think he was most likely correct, but you have to shoot them all so why not start off on the one that could be the hardest.
Starting on #1 also helps you control the pace of the squad.

I hate the fact that many pullers fail to turn the trap back on after the squad moves. It can get in your head after the 3rd or 4th time

When I first started shooting trap. I disliked shooting station 1 first. I did not want to be the center of attention. Nor did I want to shoot without looking at a target first. After a few years I knew it was time to face my fear. I asked to shoot first at every practice round I shot. Before Long I asked for Post 1 when shooting ATA as well. You have to suck it up and go for it, if you want to advance in any sport. Good Luck on your Journey. break em all jeff

A lot of times 1 is open on an early squads so I would take it sothat I can get done earlier. Whether 16's, Caps or DD.
A first Lots of times I would miss first bird out Because I really was not ready. Now I call for an extra bird- I know it is not right maybe illegal But no ones has ever said anything. And it makes me focus, more ready, and settled down a little more concentzrationing on shooting. After asking if all Ready, Lets See a Bird, Is target Ok to all. I am ready to shoot......

I really don't mind Post 1 but prefer to start on Post 5 or Post 2. During practice I will sometimes select 1, 3, or 4 just to make sure I'm not thinking about starting posts.

When I started shooting with a regular squad I was the newbie. I took the place of a shooter who stopped shooting so I took his spot starting at post 4. I never gave it a thought, but after years of shooting I love starting on 4. It gets you shooting and looking at birds. Then you get 5 and 1 out of the way and finish strong at 3. If I ever have a choice, I start at 4 out of comfort and habit.

I am so confident in shooting the hard angles on post 1 and 5 that I miss the straight away targets that I don't plan on seeing.

I liked starting on post 4.

I like shooting sta 1 first . The progression in the presentation from 1 to five is gradual . Going from sta 5 to sta 1 seems a lot harder than any other station change for me

When I started shooting registered most times when I was signing up 1 and 5 was open. Always took 5. Shooting 1 doesn't bother me but I liked 5. Got the tough posts out of the way. If you're in many shoot-offs sooner or later you're gonna have to lead off and a shoot-off isn't the place to break new ground. Besides, I've proven many times I can miss them from any post!!

1 station is my favorite because that way you move gradually to 5 and you field of you changes slowly. So no drastic changes of shooting position. When I start anywhere but 1 eventual change from 5 to 1 throws me off badly sometimes.

I like changing it up...and usually wait to fill the last spot. I also try not to overthink the position, but rather focus on the bird.

I shoot left handed and I struggled with that hard left hander on post 1, so I had a mental block about 1 for a long time. I'm pretty much over it, but I still like to start on post 2.
