For those of you in the Intermountain Region who are not attending the Grand, the annual Pocatello Gun Shoot starts this Thursday. You can read a .pdf copy of the program at the link above.

There will be 1100 registered ATA targets, with a Weatherby rifle given away on a draw score on each 100 targets - after each 100 targets, a score is drawn at random. If only one person shot that score, he/she wins the rifle outright. If multiple people shot the score, at the end of the day there is a shootoff for the gun, miss and out. The only exception is that nobody can win more than one draw-score gun.

In the recent past we have had 100 straights win draw guns, but we have also had scores in the 60s or below win. Everyone has a chance to win, no matter how you shoot.

In addition we will be giving seven Ruger 10-22 rifles as trophies on Sunday's handicaps. Draw-gun winners are eligible for these trophies.

This is one of the best shoots in the country. If you are free, come give it a shot.

I was just reading the news about the 4 guys that drowned near Pocatello. Apparently no one wore a life jacket.

Very tragic.

We'll miss you, Gary and Judy. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

According to the news this morning, four guys and five kids were in a boat on American Falls Reservoir. There was some horseplay, and one guy got pushed out of the boat. He started struggling, and the next two jumped in to try to rescue him. They started having problems, and the last one jumped in holding (NOT wearing) a life jacket. All four drowned. One of the kids phoned it in to the sheriff, and they were rescued.

I plan to be out there by mid-afternoon today, and will be registering shooters until at least 7:30 or so. There's information in the program about a fifty bird nonregistered handicap tonight. We will be open by 7:00 AM tomorrow for registration, and the practice traps should be open by 8:00 AM.

The first day is in. There were about three 100s in the singles. Four were tied at 96 in the handicap, and 99 was high in the doubles. On the draw guns, junior Phillip Barrus won the first with a lone 82. Three were tied at 84 for the handicap. I didn't get to see the shootoff. In the doubles Bill Camus beat three others after 89s.

There's still eight draw guns to go. Come on up if you can break free.

I'm having trouble figuring out the web scores posting process, so I'll try to just copy and paste here:

The 27th annual Pocatello Gun Shoot was held August 12-15 at the Pocatello, Trap Club. The shoot has 1100 ATA registered targets, and is one of the largest shoots in the Intermountain region.

The biggest reason for its popularity is that for each 100 targets shooters have a chance to win a Weatherby rifle. After each 100-target event or sub-event is completed, a score is drawn at random out of all scores shot. If only one shooter had that score, he or she wins the gun outright. If there are ties, at the end of the day all shooters with that score shoot off for the gun. The shootoff is one bird (or pair in doubles events) at a time, with a miss and out format. With spectators cheering on their friends or favorites, the competition can get quite exciting.

In addition, the yardage group trophies for the final day’s handicaps are Ruger 10-22 rifles, and the Champion of the main handicap on Sunday wins a stainless 10-22. With 16 guns to be won over four days, it’s easy to see why the shoot is popular.

Had a great time at this shoot!

Met a bunch of good people, good targets (even in the wind).

Will definately plan on attending next year.
