The factory selector needs to move over more than 1/4" to clear the right release. However, if the selector had been moved (or switched) without engaging the safety first, the gun WILL double.
If this is not the cause of your problem, maybe an internal selector is a better option, because if you put a plate on the left side to block your selector, you'll need to remove the trigger group to switch anyway.
