Have always used claybuster....how do the downrange measure up?

Trapper, I have loaded a bunch of the DRXL-1 Green Wads as well as the Claybuster CB1100-1 oz.
I wanted to try the DR wads based on recommendations from the forums. I honestly didn't pay much attention to the plastic "build up" differences that people discuss. The DR wads seemed to load and crimp just fine. They do seem to feel a bit "slicker". After loading many however I went back to the CB1100 because they seem to be a bit more rigid and less soft than the DRXLs. What I mean is that the Claybusters petals seemed to remain open which made them easier to grab and put onto the reloader wad guide and have less petal folding problems. I never patterned them side by side to see if one stood out. I would honestly choose either one if availability or price was better. If they were side by side at the same price I would choose the clay busters. YMMV.

Downrange-- just overall much better. However, if you want the best 1 oz. wad made, get the OEM WJ2 windjammer. They are cheaper than about everything else and better-- which I know is hard to believe. Only the 1 oz version though- best to leave the 9/8 oz version on the shelf and use downrange WJ's for 9/8 oz.

In my experience Remington TGT-12, Claybuster CB-8100-12 and Downrange DRRT-12 (all the same design) perform equivalently. I don't see any difference in plastic fouling or target destroying ability. About the only difference is that the DRRT-12, being dark green, is much more visible when flying through the air. When choosing among these 3 it usually boils down to price and availability.

The Windjammer WJ-2 is also a good 1 oz wad but its 8-petal design cause some folks heartburn during reloading.

I use the DR Green Duster (WW 1 oz clone). I bought them when Duster wads were in operation (before DR bought them out) and I just stuck with them buying from DR now. I use;

Gun Club hulls
16.8 grains (weighed) of Promo or Red Dot
Green Duster wad
15/16 oz of Lead Miners reclaimed shot (MEC bar throws light)
Winchester primer

I prefer to WW clone wad over the REM clone wad as it results in a high pressure which seems to make the Promo burn cleaner.

DR seems to have a wider selection of 1 oz. wads. They have WW and Rem clones along with specialty wads like the DRA12 for the AAHS hull and bulky powders like Red Dot, Promo and Clays. The DRXL wads are a clone of another type of wad called the Hawk (maybe not a clone, they might be made from the original Hawk molds).

I`ve used them both in Remington hulls for 1 oz. The Claybuster 8100-12 is "Beefier" than the Downrange RT12 for lack of a better term.
However , as others have said the RT12 is "Slicker"which makes them slightly easier to load. Velocities are pretty close for all three of these pictured. When/if you switch to the RT12 , you will not notice any difference performance-wise.
I can see no difference in the amount of "Plastic Buildup" ( which isn`t much) in my gun whether I`m shooting Claybuster , Downrange , or Factory loads. From Left: CB 1100-12 , CB 8100-12 , Downrange RT12.

If u wish to see a difference at the pattern board shoot a reload of 7 1/2 at 40 yard's

then shoot a Load of # 2 Steel Shot at same distance and Wow the results will BE Very Bold.

The Lesson is the Quality of Hard Ass Shot (Man I had baseball patterns with steel shot at 25 yard's it was a Eye Opener

Tried DR twice (yes I know stupid me) 2 different clone styles. Not good experience, off sounding--soft recoil--etc. called after the 2nd time to see if they maybe had a bad batch or something. Was told if I didn't like their product to use somebody else', went back to CBs and\or OEMs, no problems since. Other people have had better luck. YMMV Ross Puls

I can't tell much difference. I use mostly the CB 1100 and have great success with it ( especially in the Win. AA) I have also had good results with the DRXL1 espcially in the STS hulls and admit it seems a bit "slicker". When switching back and forth from Fed.--Win- Rem. hulls he DRXL1 really shines. It loads well in all three !
