My Olympus 35mm OM1-MD finally gave out and it doesn't look like repair is an option. It's about 35 years old. A lot of technology has changed and I need some help from our resident experts.

Basically I take pictures of our family, deer or game we have taken, weather (clouds, ice, etc.) What camera do you feel is the best for the money? Digital, 35mm, zoom, please address any issues you feel would help. Thanks in advance. Michael

I bought a Nikon P60 from OfficeMax for $119, what a steal!

Image stabilization, 8MP,5X zoom. Last year that was a 200 dollar plus camera.

Also, (I like this) has the ability to go from the LCD screen to a regular viewfinder. You won't know how nice this is till you use it.

Perfect family camera for low $$$.

I'm very happy with my Cannon power shot A540. Its a 6.0 pixel camera and is a bit outdated. But it has the 4x optial zoom. They are now made with 7.2 and 8.0 pixels as well. In a friends plane flying over Fort Jefferson in the dry tortugga's in the Fla. Keys at about 1000 ft or so I got the best shots of the Fort. I even had some of them blown up to frame. You would never know that I took them,and not a pro. The best point and shoot camera I have used. Good Luck and Break-em all. Jeff

There is a Pansonic out with a Leica lens. It intrigued me; I've seen the pictures that it takes and wow!!

Remember, it is the optics and electronics as much as the megapixels. These days, they all seem to be good!

I took this last summer with my Pano...(under great stress & pressure) and crystal clear as you can see, IS really does work...

Over the years I have owned a Sony Mavica 3MP, Olympus 540 3.2MP, Olympus 5500 7.2MP, Casio EX750 7.2MP and now a Panasonic Lumix FS5 10MP with IS and Leica lens...

Casio and Pano are real close but edge to the Pano....
Under $200 and with a 1G card...

After going thru 3 "point and shoot" cameras, we finally bought a Nikon SLR. Wish we had done this first. No comparison. Yes, it was $700, but it's the last camera we'll probably every buy. And we're having a LOT of fun with it.

They have some digitals on EBay that are at give away prices and got more settings than you will ever use or need ... I bought a new camera that has a book of instructions thats bigger than the camera itself, with a 10 X lens that takes beautiful pictures and even takes 20 second movie clips for like when your trapshooting and want to take a movie of it ... They range from $79.00 to the sky is the limit but they got some smoking deals on complete packages ... ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Sgt., I suggest you visit these sites and read before making the purchase:www.dpreview.com and www.cnet.com. Also, cameras are like shotguns in that each has a certain feel in your hands so visit your local camera shop. I'm very big on Ritz Camera as my gf (semi-pro photographer) had a LCD problem with her new Nikon D90 after 5-6 weeks of use, took it back to Ritz, they exchanged it with a new one right there. We have both taken National Geographic photo workshops and the majority of pros there (I'm intermediate) shoot Nikon...not that they are any "better" than Canon, but the staff photographers at Nat. Geographic say Nikon leads in support, repairs, and offer their Nikon Photo classes across the country. That said, DO NOT rule out Canon (or any other brand with a good rating) as they make top notch, quality cameras. Good luck...but be careful...like trap shooting, it can get addicting.

PS, I'm a BIG fan of Panasonic's (have 2) with their Leica lense...clarity is just amazing. Happy shopping and a good time to buy as many new models are coming out.

I have the Panasonic LZ7 Lumix. This is a digital camera. If you are interested in a digital camera I can certainly recommend this one. It takes great pictures and I am very pleased with it. Lots of nice features for varying conditions and various situations.


At one time I was a 35mm buff; I have a Nikon 2020 SLR, numerous lenses, tripods Est. I haven’t used this camera for years. Anyone interested in it?

Back to the Lumix. This camera takes very good pictures and when I print them out on my HP Photosmart C5180, the quality is very good. Perhaps not 35mm, but dam close!

Mike, just saw advertised this weekend the Cannon with 10.0 megapixel and 4x optical zoom at sears for less than $l70. Do get the large chip that holds the pictures. Oh Yeh, do buy a camera that has a chip it makes it so much nicer to get developed and to download, and you can put in a new one in less than l0 seconds to keep taking pictures after the first chip is full by placing another chip into the camera. I forgot to tell you that I just dropped (threw) my FZ28 onto the tile floor in my kitchen tonight. I broke the doohickey that attaches the lens cap to the camera. In all other respects, the camera continues to work flawlessly. I can't believe that such a great camera is really mine. Amazon.com,

BTW, that moon shot was done with the standard camera lens, unaided. It will shoot 18x optical zoom at 10 mp but will also go to 128x with digital zoom and resolution reduced to 3 mp. Here's a few more pix I took last week. (The great thing is that you can shoot all day and it doesn't cost $5/round plus ammo).

I bought a Panasonic-Lumix with Leica lense about 2 yrs ago DMC-FZ50 & love it. The price has dropped since I bought mine. They make a great camera.

An even better deal is the DMC-FZ28 that BustClays has.
