Just for fun I went to the Holiday Inn reservation site to see if there were rooms available for the main Grand week. Yep there are, total of over $1500 for six nights. Wow! That might be cheap for some places but Sparta?

I would call, i doubt the site is right on two things:

1)rooms available

2)the price

Call the Holiday Inn and see what they say. The site could be wrong.

When I was a kid working as a bellman in a Hotel they would hear about something oing on in town and the rooms would go up sharply that min. Hotels will make up their loses with one weekend on an event.

I'm certainly not defending the Holiday Inn but i highly doubt they have any rooms left for next years Grand. That Hotel is the one everyone wants to stay at because of location and how nice it is. If the rooms are available and that high its a shame. Don't trust the website, make a personal phone call.---Matt

Find out what the normal room rates are, the average.
I'd call the corporate Holiday Inn hot line / customer service and raise holy
up their A$$ on fire hell with them. Don't mention that "The Grand" is going on just tell them your there on a business trip as in none of their damned business.
Keep going through supervisors until you get as far as you can and then don't take no for an answer. Demand the normal rate.
Trust me, I've done this before, they will do it to appease you.

skip ahead two weeks and see what the price is....I did it for you....90.99/nite checking in Aug 31st...gouging thieves....too bad the place couldn't be boycotted.....so much for the anti gouging pledge the town agreed to....

Frank--also remember that the city of Sparta does not own nor run the Holiday Inn. All buisnesses were given the chance to agree to the "no gouging" agreement. That does not mean they signed it or that the city can do anything about it. I hope they do try though if it is in fact that rate. I do not believe in gouging anybody anywhere in any town for any event.--Matt

I still think that the ATA should put a hostel right next to vendor's row. It could even be a "bring your own cot or sleeping bag" type place. Charge $45 a night, and people would go for it. Vendors would love it, because they would have people walking past all the time.
