I'd say you're right on all counts. Keith at the Custom Shop can probably unearth a little information on your 870 but records on guns produced there 30 and 40 years ago are lacking in some detail. I have two Model 700 C-grades from the mid-1970s and they only have on file that they made the rifles and to whom they were shipped.

In contrast, I have a newer Custom Shop Model 700 and Keith was able to tell me when it was ordered, who it was ordered for, the specifications of the order, any changes made to the order prior to production, the date it was completed, to whom it was shipped and what the dealer's invoice amount was.

The Custom Shop's phone number is in the contact information on their page of Remington's website. He usually returns calls between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m.
