Hello:
My mother owns this computer and despite my objections she will not allow me to throw it out as we have nothing but problems with it.

When she attempts to open a PDF file it goes to microsoft media center? She has Firefox as well as internet exployer windows 7.

Any one know how to open a PDF file?

Make sure Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed. It's a free download. After it's installed try to open the .pdf file. If it doesn't:

Then, in Windows 7 click START - Default Programs - Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Then scroll down the list to .pdf and make sure Adobe Reader is selected. If not, change it to that.
