I’ve got one of those but you can’t drive it into an anvil. HeH.

Make a good one. Take a .30 cal armor piercing core and silver solder it to a 3/8” diameter tool steel round. Anneal the opposite end to reduce spalling from hammer blows. You can drive it into an anvil shoe if you “really” want to. Tough. Tungsten Carbide.

Can’t I just leave the core in the brass case and hit the back of the brass case with a hammer?

Yes you can, once.
Friend had a empty case with live primer, I struck it with a hammer and nail, didn’t bleed too much, lesson learned.

You can also get one of these things for about 6 bucks, chop off the pointy part, weld to a rod and save the AP core for what they were designed for: to set dimpled head finish nails.
