Trying to figure out what the little piece of metal about one and half inches long and maybe a half inch wide is for that fits under the barrel band between the barrel and magazine on a model 12. I have three model 12's and they all have this piece of metal almost like a piece of thin tin that hooks in the barrel band and comes down a inch or so along the magazine. Thanks, Tom.

Tom,
The part you are asking about, is called a "action slide handle retaining spring". This part puts slight pressure on the magazine tube, while removing action assembly from rest of gun, in that it keeps the magazine tube from slipping back and forth. Just a little feature that works, as you can tell when putting assembly back together, everything stays"put", until you slide magazine tube back into receiver extension, and turn the magazine locking pin to complete the assembly. Many times if this small paty is missing, it is proof that either at one time the gun was taken apart for refinishing/repair, or someone took this to replace theirs that was also "missing".

Dont trust it.

Use a swipe of masking tape around the barrel.

Lots of mod 12s with nicked up receivers from the operating rod falling down.

well on a 12 ga it is not necessary there is no movement but a 16 and 20 are same mag tube and barrel is different dia. it does make a difference then
dont beleive me take it out on a 12ga and you will see it dont do a thing
only thing it does help is keep the bushing to the flat side when you put screws in
