WASHINGTON — The top manufacturer of the military's night-vision goggles will pay $100 million for illegally sharing the classified technology with companies in Singapore, China and Britain, the U.S. Justice Department said Tuesday.
ITT (ITT) of White Plains, N.Y., the 12th-largest supplier of defense systems to the U.S. military, will also plead guilty today in U.S. District Court in Roanoke, Va., to two felony charges for outsourcing production of the goggles to unauthorized foreign companies and lying to the State Department about it, court documents say.
"ITT has put in jeopardy our military nighttime tactical advantages and America's national security," U.S. Attorney John Brownlee said in a statement.
HGWT, do you care to add something in ITT's defense. They plead guilty to two felony charges.
A very long sigh - the article you cite is only partially correct. "Plead guilty to two felony charges for outsourcing production of the goggles to unauthorized foreign companies and lying to the State Department about it". They did not outsource the tube, it was parts of the goggles. They did not have a license to make that export, it was a serious crime and it happened a long time ago. People report it here like it was something that occured last week. It was years ago. Assertions of the US Attorney are a bit overblown.
But all you current events people should really think about the information that is leaking out of our country every semester instead af a few parts that flew the coop some years back. The colleges are full of grad students who have access to lots of technology and they are not citizens. We (and our tax dollars) are educating them and they are walking away with the store. Why do you think they come here to school?? these people also get involved at Los Alamos and other very sensitive labs. We are leaking like a sieve and you are concerned about stuff that happened 4-5 years ago.
