Hi I’m just curious about silver inlays in butt stocks! I guess I’m not sure what the purpose is? If it’s just decorative or if it serves a purpose? Such as initials for personalizing. I have a 100 year old piece of wood that has passed through a few hands, before I got ahold of it. It was done a long time ago from what I can tell? I have seen similar on beretta stocks, but just curious! Thanks

I asked Jack Rowe, now deceased English gunsmith about these many years ago. He said that if you were a commoner they were an "Initial Plate". If you were a royal they were a "Coat of Arms Escutcheon." True story.

It is an escutcheon, for personalization. For engraved initials, engraved family crest, that’s all, may be brass or plated, yours may clean up with some polish.

I wonder if anyone knows someone who can re-do the initials in one of these? Or do they need redone and replaced?

Sure, when its blank you can say " Deluxe wood with oval waiting for your initials" or once initialed "Deluxe wood originally engraved for Ralph Cramden, POW ZOOM"

I bought a gun with a pistol grip plate. Had the guys initials. Bill Mains (RIP) took it and changed it to my initials in very little time at a shoot. Might depend on material, mine was silver.

It’s not good to hold back. You must learn to speak your mind.

If it is yours do as you wish. It doesn't necessarily take any value away from the gun. If it bothers you it can be easily re-done or replaced. I leave them alone. Adds provenance. I don't know anyone that passed on a good gun because of initials.

I think there could be a problem with the Model 12 with the engraving plate. I think I read somewhere that there is a space underneath the plate that might contain some type of fissionable material. I strongly suggest you send the gun to me and I’ll remedy the problem for you.

My gunsmith saves a few old silver spoons to make initial plates. He is pretty "old school"!
