Mr. Obama...In your latest attempt to strengthen your base among your underachieving supporters you're back on the income inequality kick again. Somehow suggesting discrimination. Businesses are in business to make money and they need good employees to do that. Educational equality and attitude equality will yield income equality. In other words, employers will hire the most qualified for the job as far as education and attitude as determined in the interview process. Your income redistribution scheme awards the underachievers, uneducated and lazy while taking away and destroying morale among those who contribute most to society. Unfortunately your lack of basic common sense trumps your trumped up educational background. You could show leadership by suggesting all Americans to achieve the highest education possible for the position they are seeking along with a positive attitude. Those possessing those qualities will undoubtedly get the job over those less qualified regardless of race creed or color. Hence they are a lot farther toward income equality. I hope I haven't expected too much of you as far as learning something today. ed

And lets don't forget unfettered immigration both legal and illegal, that are adding millions of people to the wage pool each year. I know far too many people who at one time made a decent living, only to lose their job or business to an immigrant who will work for half or a third the price.

Immigration is vital in a growing economy, but what about when there are 50 million people on food stamps, why bring in more people when the unemployment rate hasn't been lower than 7% in the last 6 years? Why bring in more people when median household income is lower now than in 2008? Why bring in more people when the percentage of the population now working is the lowest since the GREAT DEPRESSION? Why Barack? Why? And your the one who wants to open up the gates to anybody or anything that can crawl.. You Barack, you miserable a____ is the reason for the growing income inequality. You. You and your miserable big government policies and your refusal to secure the border.

"Why bring in more people when the unemployment rate hasn't been below 7% in the last 6 years"? Because those peoples relatives that are "citizens" vote Democrat. And when those illegals are amnestied they will someday be Democrat voters. Fun and games man, fun and games.

That 7% unemployment figure is a real joke. By the loss of tax revenues it is probably more than 20%, not to mention under employment. If the 7% figure is true, tax revenues should be at an all time high.

trapperwads and all:

There have been several news articles lately - including some yesterday - explaining that Senator Bernie Sanders (I, VT) is considering a run for prez in 2016.

Sanders is a self-described socialist. Technically speaking he's an independent. However, as Sanders' own web site explains, he caucuses with the dems. In other words dems think he's one of them and vice versa. Not surprisingly, Sanders' voting record is virtually identical to every other lib/dem in the Senate.

A few ts.commers may remember Sanders as a founding member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC). The key word is 'Progressive'. The CPC is the largest caucus in Congress with about 80 members. With one exception, every member is a democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives. As a senator and socialist, Sanders is the lone exception.

Google any of the "Sanders for prez" articles I mentioned above and you'll find income inequality is the number one problem on his priority list. Global warming is #2. Like obummer, Sanders is mortified that some U.S. citizens earn more than others. He thinks its just terrible that everyone's net worth isn't the same. His solution for income inequality? Income redistribution.

Let me be clear. If YOUR income and/or net worth is greater than the national average, Sanders, the CPC and dems in general intend to confiscate YOUR money and give it to people whose income/net worth is LESS than the national average. Income redistribution is exactly how we ended up with the 'cluster' known as obummercare.

On another thread I mentioned a non-profit non-partisan web site: Opensecrets.org. That web site's stated goals are to:

- Inform citizens about how money in politics affects their lives

- Empower voters and activists by providing unbiased information

- Advocate for a transparent and responsive government

Please spend some time on Opensecrets.org and learn where the money in politics comes from, who gets it, and what it supports.

As an aside, Opensecrets identifies about half the U.S. Senators as millionaires. Many of them are millionaires many times over. OTOH, less than 1% of the U.S. population are millionaires. There's an income inequality for you.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D, MA) is one of Sanders' favorite Progressives. He wants her to run for prez in 2016. She announced today she won't. For the record Ms. Warren is one of those Senate millionaires. Per Opensecrets she has a net worth between $4.6 and $14.7 million. She earned $940K last year alone.

If obummer, Sanders and Warren (to name just a few) have such a problem with income inequality, why don't they start redistributing their own damn money?

On the same theme, obummer was a member of the Senate. Sanders has been a member for years. During the first two years of the obummer administration, the House, Senate and White House were all controlled by lib/dem/socialists. Nothing was done in those two years to redistribute the 'excess wealth' of House and Senate millionaires. Why not? obummer's sycophants passed obummercare during those two years. Could it be lib/dem/socialists are far more interested in redistributing OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY THAN THEIR OWN?

One of Obamas bullship lines was there are no red states no blue states just the United States. There are no republican Americans no democrat Americans just Americans. So in his vision I would assume there would be no progressive caucus no black caucus just representatives. With all his screw ups if he were Japanese and Emperor he would have done the honorable thing and jumped on his sword by now. ed

Sanders has ZERO chance of being a significant candidate in 2016. He's a white male leftist. That package isn't gonna fly. IF he were to make any attempt to enter the race for the Dem. nomination it would be to make Hillary look like the "moderate".

We may not like Obama, but income equality, i.e. the shrinking middle class and dying working class with a decent income, but he make a good point. Income equality is a growing problem. No, George Bush didn't cause it. It has grown worse under Obama. I see nothing that Obama will do to help it, and lot's he will do to make it worse. But it is a growing problem whether Obama says that or not.

Good Morning Don:

Your premise is correct. Sanders has little if any chance of actually winning the dem nomination.

By his own words a Sanders candidacy would be contingent on the absence of a "suitable Progressive". He has also identified Elizabeth Warren as his first choice Progressive. Unfortunately for Sanders Warren was quoted yesterday saying she wouldn't run.

Sanders describes Hillary as a "moderate dem". That's why he and like minded members of the knee jerk liberal base want no part of her. Their preferred candidate is someone who will work full time on the "income inequality crisis" (another Sanders' quote) and other socialist programs. He and they want a candidate who eats, drinks, sleeps, and lives socialist priorities. Hillary is way left of center but she isn't a committed full time socialist. Besides, Sanders has also been clear that Hillary has to much money and associates herself with others that do too.

Sanders has threatened to run only in the absence of a "suitable Progressive candidate". The goal of would be to pull the base (and other candidates) as far left as possible. And... it will work.

Income inequality has been growing in the US and other developed countries for a long time. It is a bigger issue in the US.

Apparently the income difference between the wealthiest 1 percent of the US population and everyone else has been rising, although not consistently, since the 1920's. Take a look at the multiple of income by the CEOs of major firms and what they pay their workers. Compare that to what it was in the 1950s

We may not like our President, but he certainly didn't cause the problem. In fact, as some of the writers above seem to hint, it's not really a problem. Obama is just the first President to talk about it.

The Bush 2 tax cuts for the wealthy certainly helped increase the spread.

Sissy it might come back to bite them in the a$$, if he does run and enough libs vote for him, it would decrease the votes for Hillary, and it might make enough difference that the republican might win

Remember when Ross Perot ran? That is what did in HW Bush

You want to make as much money as the top guy. Get his education and take the same type of steps he did to achieve it. There will never be income equality. Some professions pay more that others. Steps are already in place to assure fair pay for a fair days work. A mechanic does not make as much money as a surgeon. But to take away from the achievers and give it to the bitchers is ridiculous. Some one told me years ago if you took all the money in the world and divided it equally within ten years those that have it now will have it again because of knowledge and making the right moves. One step to real income equality is for the bitchers to get the lead out of their ass and stop bitchin'.

under Obama the top 1 per cent has had an increase in income of over 30 per cent, while the middle class has lost 8 percent.

Nice job, you freakin liar.

I remember my economics prof telling the class that if we took everyone's money and spread it all so that everyone would have the exact same amount, within ten years the people we took the money from would have it all back. That's because they are smart, educated, know how business works, and are willing to work hard and take risks - not sit on their butt and do nothing worthwhile.

Go back in the archives of Forbes Magazine's "Millionaires" lists and notice that every year one or two new names are added and one or two names are dropped. That is true of the " Top 1% " in the USA and always has been. That a few names stay on the 1% list isn't a surprise at all but that more than half of the top 1% are on and then off the list in any 20 year period IS a surprise. The class warfare argument of income inequality has been used to foment dissent in the mass of average folk since before the Bolshevik Revolution where the communist bastards took Russia and rode it, as well as every bordering country, back into the 12th Century. The argument that works with losers is to tell them that THEY didn't fail and are not losers but that the SYSTEM has failed them and should be changed. Read your history and wake UP. The 'income inequality' crap worked in 1917, how in the HELL can anyone be fooled into thinking it is true in 2013 almost 100 years later?

Those feeling sorry for themselves are those buying this lie. Its an easy one for them to believe. And Obama doesn't really care about them. Thats the statement that would be most difficult if not impossible to convince them of. We all know of two men...the first rose from a large family living in poverty in a ghetto who went on to become a world renowned surgeon and the head of his department at a major hospital. He is Doctor Ben Carson. The other attained a position far above his abilities and was able to achieve this because his speaking skills and ability to deceive deluded millions. He has the ability to make P.T Barnum look like the pope. Thats Barack Obama. ed

It's only going to get worse!

For many working low paying service jobs, that's the best they can hope for as they were not educated beyond that, as many cities have failed school systems.

Add the number of Illegal immigrants (largely unskilled and uneducated) who are being allowed to work in the USA and / or becoming legal.

The under educated group of people working those type of jobs will only grow, and as they try to raise families on those salaries, they are not going to be happy at even $13 or $15 an hour.

Shocker: 80% of NYC graduates unable to read

New York City’s literacy rates are on the decline: nearly 80 percent of high school graduates lack basic skills like reading, writing and math and are required to relearn them before qualifying for community college.

During his most recent State of the City address, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg hyped about the large investment the city has made on education – a multi-billion dollar investment that seems to have done little to help the city’s teens.

Critics pointed out that just 13 percent of black and Latino students graduate from New York City schools with the skills required for community college – and overall, 80 percent of all graduates lack these skills.

The number of students who lack crucial reading, writing and math skills is the highest it has been in years, CBS 2 reports. Officials from City University told the news station that 79.3 percent of graduates, or 10,700 students, who arrived to take a test to get into community college last year failed and were required to relearn basic skills that should have been taught in high school. This is a sharp increase from the 71.4 percent who were lacking the skills in 2007.

------------------------

On CNBC this morning they were discussing minimum wage issues.

It was brought up that over 3 million high skilled jobs are going unfilled in the USA, but can't be filled, as most don't have the job skills needed to migrate to those jobs.

Bill Stern,

Did you always take what your economics professor told you as gospel truth? If you were to read the many posts in TS regarding economic teaching in universities, you would have to come to the conclusion that they are all Communists.

In any case I doubt that it is true that after 10 years most of the money would be returned to the same owners. If you take a look at who the upper earners, not the billionaires, are the in the US are, you will find that disproportionally, they went to very good schools (expensive), got high paying jobs after university (well introduced by good contacts) and chose their parents from groups of well educated, high earning individuals. There is no particular reason to suspect that they are particularly smarter or harder working than the guys who didn't choose their parent as carefully.

It is certainly true that some people rise above the origins and that's what makes them interesting. For most ii is statistically unlikely.

halfmile,

In 1976 the top 1% of earners in the US earned approximately 27% of total US income. In 2011, they earned approximately 19%. I wasn't able to find data beyond 2011. (World Bank/CIA). Obama became President in 11/ 2008.

From your comments I am assuming that you were referring to me. If so, I will accept the first part of your statement as a complement and ignore the last, at least until you come up with some data to show that I am wrong and it is all Obama"s fault.

"Nice job, you freakin liar."
